Michael Preminger always manages to crack a joke. The seasoned comedian, who has spent decades performing at some of the country’s most famous venues, brings that quality to Los Angeles Jewish Health as a dedicated volunteer (LAJH).
Michael notes, “The Los Angeles Jewish Health standards are fun and a real joy to be around.” “I asked a woman named Edna, who was 104 when I started helping, if she would ever consider dating younger guys. Are there other types? she asked without missing a beat as she turned to me.”
Michael has returned to LAJHealth as a volunteer for over ten years because of the friendship and laughter that reigns there. His many television appearances on The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, The Dinah Shore Show and other shows showed his professional satisfaction with his career achievements. Although he co-wrote the acclaimed and financially successful film Nothing in Common with Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason, his weekly trips to LAJHealth bring him great personal satisfaction.
I can still hear Rita, the woman, saying in Yiddish, “Vos geven iz geven,” which translates to “What was, is.” Basically, she confirms that we can’t go back in time and can only look forward, which I think is a pretty meaningful way of looking at the world,” Michael declares.
Hearing residents’ stories is one of my most enjoyable things about working at LAJHealth. He yells, “Someone told me he went dancing with the Dodgers when they were still in Brooklyn. These people have accomplished incredible things and after hearing their stories, I feel like I have traveled the world with them, from Brooklyn to Buenos Aires.
Michael is a native New Yorker who moved to Los Angeles in 1975 to pursue his love of show business after being born in the Bronx. As he rose through the ranks of comic popularity, he raised a son and a daughter. His touring days have slowed down as a grandfather, allowing him to focus on other activities like supporting Los Angeles Jewish Health.
