The referee then took the players off the field in stoppage time after they had waited in the technical area.

Millwall’s medical staff were stopped by paramedics as the home fans applauded the fans as they were lifted onto a stretcher.

Millwall tweeted: “Players have left the pitch following a medical emergency in the crowd.

“We send our best wishes to those who get attention.”

While the players were waiting for a solution, a second medical emergency occurred that further delayed the match.

The game finally resumed after about 30 minutes.

The game was 1-0 to Sunderland at the time of the first incident – Aaron Connolly put the visitors ahead in the 10th minute.

But Millwall salvaged a point in stoppage time thanks to Femi Azeez’s cross.

Reacting to the medical emergency, one social media user said: “Fingers are crossed for the fan involved.”

While another added: “I hope everything ends well 🙏🏼 I never want to see this.”

And a third replied: “Hope people are well and sending best wishes 💙⚽️💙😀🙋‍♀️.”

Sunderland, who brought 3,000 fans with them on the trip to Millwall, missed out on a chance to go top of the Championship as they now sit a point behind Sheffield United.
