The HGTV star, who has been candid about her rifts with her mom and former co-star Karen. E. Laine and brother Tad Starsiak updated fans on how she and husband Steve Hawk celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas on the latest episode of their podcast, Mine AF.

Mina says the couple used Turkey Day as a rehearsal to deal with the situation. Afterward, however, he says, “Thanksgiving really didn’t sit well with me.”

“Steve and I didn’t end up celebrating Thanksgiving with the whole family,” she explains. “I felt that the consequences of being away would be easier to bear than the bad feelings I would have when I was there, sitting at the table and pretending that everything was fine.”

Mina had previously suggested that she might arrive and leave early at family gatherings to avoid flare-ups.

“We went and saw my dad and my stepmom before Thanksgiving, so at least we got that, but I know it’s not the same for him, and it’s really hard for me,” she says.

The Good bones alum spent the next few weeks thinking about her plans for Christmas.

As she shared in the previous episode Mine AF in late November, she and Steve reached a compromise after receiving conflicting invitations to spend Christmas Eve at his grandmother’s house and at her sister’s cookie-making pajama party.

Mina says that the plan worked in the end. The couple brought their two children, 5-year-old son Jack and 3-year-old daughter Charlie, to his grandmother’s gathering, and after an hour, Mina and the kids left for another event while Steve stayed behind to spend more time with his estranged family. .

As for Christmas, even though Steve didn’t make it to every event, Mina says, “I ended up going to all the family celebrations.”

“After Thanksgiving, I kind of adjusted my mindset to, ‘I can’t control any of this,'” she continues. “I’ve had my say, people know what I’m up to, and me being anxious, upset or stressed at the moment doesn’t really affect anyone but me. So I’m just going to go ahead mentally and make the decisions that I think are right, do the things that I think are the best, and if other people don’t, then they’ve shown me who they are and where I stand and from there I can make my own decisions .”

“A lot of things remain and are unsettled in my family country and I have finally come to a place where I am completely ok,” she added. “And I don’t need to put more energy into it until outside energy is put into it in a way that makes it worth re-engaging.”

Mina has been open about the bad blood with family members during previous conversations on her podcast, saying she wasn’t “in a good place” with either Tad or her mom.
