Mind-boggling optical illusion leaves viewers stumped – can you figure out if the object is going up or down the stairs?

MOST people can’t tell which way an object is moving on a ladder in a stunning optical illusion.

The 3D Schröder staircase is a new interpretation of the traditional 2D image.

This optical illusion makes people confused about which way the stairs are going.

In the traditional illusion, the staircase is viewed from above. The image then rotates and shows the exact same stairs despite the angle change.

In the 3D version of the illusion, the object is placed on a ladder.

At first, the object appears to be at the top of the stairs.

But then the interpretation changes when the object is rotated 180 degrees.

An object, originally perceived as being on the top step, suddenly appears as being on the bottom step.

The most shocking part of the video comes when the artist reveals a side view of the staircase.

The creation received the prize for the illusion of the year 2020 in the contest for the best illusion of the year.

A video showing the illusion was posted on YouTube, garnering over 2 million views and hundreds of comments.

“Infuriating,” wrote one person. “I watched it 10 times, trying to keep my concentration, [sic] stay in the starting position. And every time ‘oops, I missed it’. Fantastic.”

Another wrote: “It is very interesting how our brain processes this simple graphic information and interprets it in so many different ways without us realizing it…

“And it’s amazing how the human brain can come up with these illusions!”

“I was looking at the stairwell when I was upside down and I blinked and it looked normal oh my gosh my brain exploded,” wrote a third.
