Miriam Margolyes Says Steve Martin Was ‘Horrid’ to Her on ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ Set

Looks like Miriam Margolyes isn’t the biggest fan of her former co-star Steve Martin.

The pair both starred in the 1986 cult classic Little shop of horrorswith Martin, 78, playing dentist Orin Scrivell and Margolyes one of his dental nurses.

Recalling their experience together on the set, Margolyes marked Just the murders in the building star “unlovable” and “terrible” in her new memoir Oh Miriam: Stories from an unusual life.

In the film, Margolyes and Martin perform the musical number “Dentist!”, in which Martin’s character Orin punches Margolyes’ character in the face, who also enjoys opening the door for his assistant.

According to the Huffington Post, Harry Potter the actress writes in her book: “The whole day I was hit by doors that opened in front of my face; repeatedly punched, slapped and knocked down by the unlovable and undesirable Steve Martin – perhaps he was faking the method – and came home grumpy with a pounding headache. Let it not be said that I have never suffered in the name of art.”

She added that Martin is “undoubtedly brilliant, but terrible to me”.

Margolyes also compared Martin to her Ed and his dead mother costar Steve Buscemi, calling the 65-year-old “unmistakably cute” and revealing that he “knocked the spots off Steve Martin.”

Last year, Margolyes weighed in on working with another famous face – Arnold Schwarzenegger – and claimed the actor was “actually quite rude”, even “deliberately” farting in her face while filming their 1999 film. End of the day.

She told news.com.au’s I have news for you podcast, “He farted in my face. Now, I fart, of course I fart — but I don’t fart in people’s faces. He did it on purpose, right in my face.”

Margolyes added that she “doesn’t care” for the former California governor, 76, because he is “a little too full of himself.”

In the cover story for British Vogue’s In the July issue of Pride earlier this year, Margolyes opened up about her career, upbringing and coming out as a lesbian in 1966.

“I think gay people are very lucky, because we’re not conventional, we’re a group that’s a little bit different,” she told the publication. “That gives us an edge. We’re good artists, we’re good musicians.”

“And I love being gay. I wouldn’t want to be straight for anything,” Margolyes added.

The British-Australian star went on to say that she’s “never been ashamed of being gay or anything really.” “I knew it wasn’t a crime because it was me. I couldn’t be a criminal,” Margolyes explained.

The actress’ second memoir should be published in January.
