Missing Dog on the Mend After Accidentally Getting High on Pot Brownies

A missing Hutchinson, Minnesota dog is on the mend after accidentally getting high on cookies.

Earlier this week, the puppy — named Dozer — escaped from its owner Jake Carrigan’s garage while he was at work, Pet Poison Helpline said in a press release shared with PEOPLE.

Carrigan received a text message from his brother during his shift, asking if Dozer had left the house because he had seen someone post a picture of a lost dog on Facebook that looked just like a puppy.

After driving to where the dog was seen, Carrigan said he couldn’t find it. Having to return to work, he asked his neighbor to open his garage in case the dog came home. The neighbor agreed and went in search of Dozer himself. Then he discovered that the dog could not move.

“When I found him, he couldn’t walk,” Carrigan said. “He bit my hand when I went to pick him up, which he would never do otherwise. I knew something was wrong, so I immediately took him to our vet.”

After arriving at Lifelong Veterinary Clinic, Dozer could not move his hind limbs and was numb and hypersensitive.

“Abdominal X-rays showed the stomach was full, so the medical team induced vomiting and found about half a kilogram of what they determined to be chocolate chip cookies containing marijuana,” Dr. Renee Schmid, senior veterinary toxicologist at Pet Poison. Helpline, the statement said.

In addition to marijuana, the clinic’s medical team was also concerned about chocolate poisoning.

“The severity of chocolate poisoning varies greatly depending on the type and amount of chocolate ingested and the size of the pet,” Dr. Schmid said.

Currently, Dozer is on the mend and recovering from the cookie in the pot incident.

“The vet told me that after they emptied his stomach, the whole clinic smelled like a marijuana dispensary,” Carrigan said with a laugh, according to the post.

Calling the ordeal with his canine companion “weird,” he continued, “I don’t know if he snuck into someone’s house or if someone fed him cookies.”

“Maybe they were cooling off outside, and he helped himself,” added the dog’s dad, noting that he asked a neighbor if those were his desserts that Dozer got his hands on.

“I asked my neighbor who I suspect might enjoy those cookies, and he said they weren’t from his house,” Carrigan said.
