Missing Dog Spotted Alive 11 Months After Colorado Avalanche Separated Pet from His Owner

Trail cameras found Ullr, a dog separated from his owner, Jacob Dalbey, after an avalanche in Colorado in March 2023.

Eleven months after an avalanche on Chair Mountain separated the border collie/rotweiler mix and Dalbey, cameras set up by a dog tracking team spotted Ullr alive, according to an updated GoFundMe post from Dalbey on Thursday.

“After 341 days, 11 months to the day of setting up tracking/food cameras and moving them around in hopes of luring Ullr into one to finally get confirmation of what I knew all along, it happened…” the dog’s owner wrote in update to raise funds to help locate that pet.

Dalbey also said Ullr appeared to be in good health despite living in the wild for almost a year.

“There are plans in place to make this happen and get my incredibly strong boy to safety,” he wrote on GoFundMe, adding that the team he hired to find his dog is closer to getting Ullr back now that they can assess the dog’s location.

“Please hold those reports of paw prints, barking or possible sightings – any lead is good until we prove it isn’t,” Dalbey said.

Dalbey’s friend, Deb Wieker, set up a GoFundMe page shortly after the avalanche to help the pet parent cover the costs needed to locate Ullr.

Dogs have shown resilience in the wild, enduring months in uncontrolled conditions. On February 20, a dog named Ghost was rescued after nine months alone in the Arizona desert. Local residents helped the Lost and Stray Squad to bring the 6-year-old dog to safety.

“He brought so many people together. He bought people who don’t even have dogs buying him food and bringing him treats. He brought so many people together,” said Desirae Trubee, co-founder of the Lost and Stray Response Squad.
