The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office has identified the deceased man found inside a 55-gallon drum in Malibu Lagoon on Monday. The victim’s name is Javonnta Murphy, as officially announced on Tuesday. The discovery occurred when a park maintenance worker noticed the barrel floating in the water near the Pacific Coast Highway bridge on Sunday night. Their attempts to bring it to shore were futile due to its weight, leaving the barrel in the water. The following morning, around 10 a.m., a lifeguard spotted the barrel and swam to retrieve it, leading to the unsettling discovery, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. According to Lt. Hugo Raynaga, the victim’s body did not appear to be decomposed or have been in the water for an extended period. Authorities speculate that the high tide might have brought the barrel into the lagoon from the ocean. The discovery has deeply concerned and shocked beachgoers and surfers in the area, as such incidents are rare in this location. Detectives are actively investigating the case, combing the area for potential clues, witnesses, or surveillance footage that might aid in the investigation.

A maintenance worker initially spotted the drum on Sunday and brought it to the sandy shore of the Malibu lagoon using a kayak without opening it. The following day, a lifeguard saw the same barrel in the lagoon and swam out to retrieve it. Upon opening the barrel, the lifeguard made the disturbing discovery of a deceased body inside. An unnamed source familiar with the investigation indicated that the suspicious weight of the sealed barrel and the naked state of the body suggest foul play, making the death highly likely to be a case of deliberate harm.
Javonnta Murphy was not only pursuing a career in rapping but also trying to make it in the music industry as a singer-songwriter. At present, the Medical Examiner’s Office is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, and the police have not made any arrests in connection with the case. Javonnie Murphy, the father of the deceased, is hopeful that in the coming days, there will be answers and justice for his son. He strongly believes that those responsible will eventually be held accountable by a higher power for their actions. “The only thing I can say is you have got to answer to the man upstairs,” he expressed. “You have got to answer to Him upstairs.”
