Mithun was born Gourang Chakraborty on June 16, 1950, in Barisal, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), to an Indian-Bengali family. Currently, he lives with his family in Ooty, Tamil Nadu. He received most of his schooling in Calcutta and completed his graduation in chemistry from Church of Scotland College, Calcutta.
