Mohamed Muizou is a Maldivian engineer and politician. In October 2023, he was elected President of the Maldives. He is also known for his pro-China stance. He launched the “India Exit” initiative during the 2023 presidential campaign. The aim is to withdraw Indian troops from the Maldives. These troops have been stationed in the country since 1988.

Mohamed Muizzu’s political career began in 2012 after joining the Justice Party (AP). On 21 May 2012, Muizou was appointed Minister of Housing and Environment under President Mohamed Wahid Hassan Manik. In 2013, he joined the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA). After the presidential election that year, he was reappointed as Minister of Housing and Environment. He is recognized in the Maldives for executing Chinese-led and funded projects. He played a vital role in the construction of the world-famous Sinnamale Bridge, completed in 2018. Additionally, he played an important role in Male’ Ring Road development project. Some other important projects under his leadership include the renovation of Rasfanoo Beach, King Salman Grand Mosque and Sultan Park. He has helped the Maldivian government seal agreements and deals with world powers such as China, Saudi Arabia, India, the United Kingdom and the United States. Muizu served as minister until November 17, 2018.
In 2019, he left the MDA and joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). According to sources, he decided to quit MDA and join PPM in order to work closely with the then Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
He was later appointed deputy chairman of the People’s Progressive Party and in charge of the electoral department. In 2021, Muizou ran for the Male mayoral election in the name of PPM. In this election, he received a total of 9,548 votes and defeated his closest Democratic rival Anas Abdel Sattar by 3,791 votes. It is known that the Malian Democratic Party has a stronghold in the city of Male; it has been in power in the city for eleven years.
In 2023, the Progressive Alliance alliance consisting of the PPM and the People’s National Congress (PNC) decided to offer Muizu a presidential election ticket. Member of Parliament Hussain Mohamed Latheef was chosen as his running mate. In the first round of the presidential election, Mohamed Muizou received 46.06% of the vote, while his closest competitor, Ibrahim Mohamed Saleh, received 39.05%. However, none of them were declared the winner as according to the Maldivian election rules, a candidate must receive at least 50% of the votes to be declared the winner. The second round of elections was held in September 2023, with Muizou defeating Saleh with 54.04% of the vote. During the presidential election, Muizur launched the “India Retreat” movement, expressing his intention to withdraw Indian soldiers deployed in the Maldives after coming to power. In an interview, he talked about the campaign and said,
The sovereignty of the Maldives is paramount. The people have decided that they do not want Indian troops to stay in the Maldives. Therefore, foreign soldiers cannot come here against our feelings and against our will.So I have to tell [Indian] The ambassador who is going to meet me said that we will have a good relationship with these values. “

Allegation of forcing maid to commit suicide
During the 2023 presidential election, opposition parties accused Mohamed Muizou of forcing foreign maids to commit suicide in 2012 when he was minister of housing and infrastructure. They also claimed that the maid often acted maliciously towards her and was driven to commit suicide as a result. However, Muizu’s wife denied the accusation at a rally. He said the opposition parties were spreading false information to damage Muizu’s image. She further said that the police investigated the matter thoroughly but did not come to such a conclusion. she says,
Murder and rape charges. Even from our society, the extent to which fallacies are spread should be taken into consideration. It’s really sad that things have reached this point. It’s really sad that they spread rumors like this to tarnish someone’s reputation. ”
