He studied at Air Force Balbarati School in New Delhi. As a student, he was not very good in academics and always sat in the last row of the class. Mohit often skipped classes to play cricket during his school days. After completing his studies, Mohit joined Shahid Bhagat Singh College to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce degree. However, he dropped that course midway and joined Amity College of Commerce in Noida to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. During college, Mohit acted in theatre performances. At that time, he was advised to try his luck in films and television serials. In 2005, Mohit made a portfolio of his work and sent it to Mumbai, after which he received a call for an audition. He subsequently moved to Mumbai and was selected for a television show.

Mohit Malik started his acting career in 2005 with the role of ‘Aaoni’ in the TV serial Miilee. He went on to act in TV serials like Jab Love Hua, Durgesh Nandinii and Pari Hoon Main. In 2008, he participated in the dance reality show Nach Baliye 4 with his then girlfriend Addite Shirwaikar.
