In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar for its “Fashion Flashback” series, which asks stars to look back on their greatest fashion moments on and off screen, Feud: Capote vs. Swans star, 56, revealed what she initially thought of the dress her character Andie wore to her prom in the 1986 film.
“The dress is so iconic now; I really hated it then, it wasn’t what I imagined,” she said when shown a picture of the dress.
Prompted by someone offscreen to share her reaction when she first saw the dress, Ringwald said, “I cried, I burst into tears, nobody can look good in this dress. It’s not a very flattering dress.”

She reflected on the specific design of the dress, saying that she liked the pink lace halter on the top, but at the time she wasn’t thrilled with the “inverted triangle” shape of the rest of the dress that was trendy at the time in the ’80s.
“Given that Andie was supposed to be a big fashion designer, I thought maybe she should have done something else,” laughed Ringwald, referring to her character in the film, in which a teenager must choose between taking her childhood sweetheart or her rich , a sensitive new crush on prom.

Ringwald said she kept most of the clothes from Pretty in pink except for the prom dress in question, which was made by Marilyn Vance, who also worked on the cult film from 1990. Pretty Woman.
“It’s a shame — I’d love it now,” Ringwald said, adding that she would have told her younger self to “have a sense of humor” about the dress, adding, “If you can look good in this dress, you can look good in anything. ”
