Shocking footage posted on social media shows the athlete being helped off the ice at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield after a clash with a blood-stained shirt.
Johnson, 29, received emergency medical treatment and was then rushed to hospital, but later died from his wounds.
The Steelers returned to the ice Sunday for their first home game since Johnson, who previously played in the NHL, passed away.
More than 8,000 fans observed a minute’s silence before the Steelers’ 2-1 win against the Coventry Blaze.
Players could be seen banging their hockey sticks on the ice at the Utilita Arena Sheffield as the crowd clapped for a minute.
Before the start of the match, Petgrave’s image also appeared on the big screen inside the arena, even though he was not playing.
In videos shared online, fans appear to be applauding the defender’s image that night.
The collision was described as a “freak accident” in a club statement released by the Panthers, while Petgrave was said to be “absolutely distraught”.
There were no suggestions of wrongdoing.
South Yorkshire Police confirmed it was carrying out a “range of enquiries”, including seeking help from “specialist experts”, as part of its investigation into Johnson’s death.
Meanwhile, Johnson’s family said they believed Petgrave’s actions may have been “reckless”.
Grieving aunt Kari Johnson, 62, insisted she did not think opposition player Petgrave, 31, intended to kill her “amazing” nephew.
But she commented that Petgrave’s actions during the game were “reckless”.
Speaking from her home in Kelly Lake, Minnesota, Kari said: “It was very reckless. I just want them to make it right. We’re looking for justice for Adam.”
