Morgan Huxley is sitting alone at a small table in the lobby bar of the Oaks Hotel in Sydney’s Neutral Bay, taking a sip of a schooner and checking his Samsung Galaxy phone for new messages. The handsome, bearded 31-year-old is still wearing the shorts and blue T-shirt he wore to his best friend Chris Maroney’s engagement party in Lane Cove the night before. It’s just after 1 am.
Morgan texts her friend Rebecca to apologize for not being there earlier to meet her and some friends. He is barefoot because he forgot her thong at a casual meeting. He also has sunglasses on his head. He has always had a hard time remembering social events, and at the party he was having so much fun that he lost track of time.
Chris and his fiancee Philippa, who live down the street, and I took a cab home together, and Morgan asked them to join him for a drink. Chris smiled as he saw his good friend walking down Watson Street toward The Oaks without ever stopping by his apartment to buy a pair of shoes. ‘No man, we’re done, let’s do it tomorrow,’ he muttered.
On the television on the other wall, Morgan watched him. After the elections on September 7, 2013, it was well after midnight. He writes another text message, this time to a woman he knows from grade school and with whom he was in a relationship for four years.
Morgan doesn’t notice the guy standing outside Curry Palace, the Indian restaurant across the street, waiting and watching. Just 20 minutes earlier, Morgan had stood behind a thin, wavy 20-year-old redhead with glasses at EasyMart as he clumsily tried to withdraw money from an ATM.
The young man then saw Morgan crossing the street in his bare feet as he was led away from The Oaks’ posh back bar. The young man who nicknamed Morgan ‘Shoeless’ the security guard outside the Indian restaurant. As Morgan walks into the hotel’s less formal front bar, the two begin to chat. a young man whose middle name is Jack, but whose first name is Daniel.
Jack Kelsall may seem like your standard owlish, dutiful geek, but on the inside he’s a seething pit of cold anger that, under the wrong circumstances, can mutate into something repulsive and hideous. He ended up working at a culinary establishment cleaning dishes for a 21st birthday party.
