The most powerful dragons in Game of Thrones and House of The Dragon
In Game of Thrones and its predecessor series House of The Dragon, there are some really strong dragons. The most powerful are called Balerion Black Dread, Drogon, Viserion and Rhaegal. Balerion, who was the largest and most feared dragon, helped Aegon the Conqueror take control of Westeros.
Drogon, one of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons, is known for being very large, aggressive and capable of destroying armies. Viserion, another dragon, was killed and then brought back to life by the Night King as an ice dragon, making him incredibly strong.

Balerion, “Black Fear”
Balerion was the oldest and largest dragon among the Targaryens. He played a key role during Aegon’s conquest of Westeros, earning him the nickname “The Black Dread”. Witnessing the fall of the Valyrian Empire, Balerion helped establish Targaryen rule.
Vhagar
Initially the smallest of Aegon I’s dragons, Vhagar proved to be a formidable warrior. He fought in many wars across Westeros and grew to Balerion’s size, becoming the greatest Targaryen dragon of his time.
Caraxes, “The Blood Wyrm”
Caraxes, also known as the “Blood Wyrm”, was a vicious and clever dragon. Initially claimed by Prince Aemon, it later became the mount of Aemon’s nephew, Daemon, during numerous battles. Caraxes gained considerable combat experience, even competing with Vhagar.
Dreamfyre
Dreamfyre, a fully grown dragon, has remained loyal to House Targaryen since the reign of Maegor the Cruel. She was ridden by Princess Rhaena, and spent most of her life on the other side of Westeros. After Rhaena’s death, Dreamfyre bonded with Helaena Targaryen, sister and queen of Aegon II.
Meleys, “The Red Queen”
Meleys, known as the “Red Queen”, was one of the oldest dragons from the second generation of Targaryens. Although she did not participate in battles, her impressive size made her a force to be reckoned with. Initially ridden by Princess Alyssa, Meleys was later taken over by Princess Rhaenys.
Rhaegal
Rhaegal, named after Daenerys Targaryen’s eldest brother, Prince Rhaegar, was the second largest of her dragons. With green and bronze scales, Rhaegal formed a close bond with his younger brother Viserion. It played a significant role in the battle against the Night King, and Daenerys allowed Jon Snow to ride it.
Syracuse
Syrax, a stunning golden-green dragon, was chosen to be Princess Rhaenyra’s mount. Although she rarely participated in battle or hunting, Syrax accompanied Rhaenyra on important missions, confirming her position as Queen of Westeros.
Viserion
Viserion, the smallest of Daenerys’ dragons, had beautiful gold and cream colored scales. Named after her angry brother, Viserys, he had a calm demeanor but could become violent if necessary. Unfortunately, Viserion was felled by the Night King and reanimated as his mount.
Caraxes
Caraxes, the Blood Wyrm, was a fierce and clever dragon from his youth, earning him the name Blood Wyrm. At first it was taken by Prince Aemon and they fought bravely, but unfortunately Caraxes was killed in the battle against Dorne. However, that was not the end of his story. Aemon’s nephew, Daemon, later took over Caraxes and they fought many battles together, making Caraxes as skilled as the mighty Vhagar.
Drogon
Drogon, Daenerys’ first and largest dragon, was named after her first husband, Khal Drogo. It had striking red and black colors and created the strongest connection with Daenerys. Their relationship had its ups and downs, with times when they were left behind and faced challenges. But in time, Drogon became calm enough for Daenerys to ride him into battle, showing off his incredible power and strength.
