Moushumi Chatterjee was born as Indira Mukherjee (aka Indira Chattopadhyay) on Monday 26 April 1948 in Bikrampur, West Bengal (75 years; till 2023). Her zodiac sign is Taurus. She attended Sir Nilipendra Nas Girls High School in Kolkata. When she was in 10th grade, she got married, after which she dropped out.

In 2019, Dicky Sinha, the son of her daughter Payal, said in an interview that he would file a defamation lawsuit against Moushumi. Chatterjee’s allegations that her daughter Payal was not being properly cared for by her husband Dickie and his family sparked Dickie’s response. In the video shared online, Dickie claimed that he and his family went out of their way to sincerely love and care for Payal. He mentioned having prescriptions and medical documents from various hospitals as evidence her treatment was ongoing. Moreover, Chatterjee emphasized his deep love for his wife despite claims to the contrary. Because of her dry eyes, doctors ranging from pulmonologists to nephrologists, gastroenterologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists and ophthalmologists visited and treated her. At the end of the video, Dickey said that two trained nurses cared for Payal from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and all details were documented. In 2018, Moushumi was involved in a legal battle over Payal’s custody. She accused Dicky and Payal’s in-laws of neglecting their daughter’s welfare. She also claimed they refused to pay Payal’s medical bills.

In an interview, Mushumi recounted an unpleasant comment she received from Indian actor Rajesh Khanna. He raised the issue of whether Vinod Mehra was the father of her child. - One day, when she was coming home from school, a film director noticed her. He expressed interest in casting her in the Bengali film “Balika Badhu” and visited her home to seek her father’s approval. Initially, her father refused, but the director’s wife (a famous actress) stepped in and convinced him to give permission. At that time, Mao Shumi was in fifth grade. In an interview, she said she didn’t enjoy filming the film because she had to wear a lot of makeup and didn’t have enough time to play. She said she was made to wear tight tops and sari in order to look like a teenager. She was uncomfortable and put them on reluctantly. She even escaped from the dressing room twice.
