Muhammad Ajmal Variyathodi grew up in Palakkad where he started his sporting career as a footballer. He played football at the U-19 state level until his coach Nanda Kumar suggested that he switch his focus from football to running. This gave birth to 400 meter sprinter Muhammad Ajmal Variyathodi. He started out as a 100-meter sprinter and later transformed into a 400-meter sprinter through practice and coaching.
In 2019, he got the opportunity to participate in international competitions for the first time. He participated in the Summer Universiade in Naples. In the 200 meters, he entered the semifinals with a time of 21.18 seconds. He also competed in the Indian 4×100m relay, but his time of 40.73 seconds was not enough to qualify for the final round.
Ajmal finished third in the 7th International Sprint Relay Cup held at the Ataturk University Stadium in Turkey with a time of 46.04 seconds. In 2021, he won the inter-service championship gold medal with a time of 46.91 seconds. His strong run continued into 2022, when he won gold at the Indian Grand Prix with a time of 46.78 seconds.
In 2022, he participated in the World Championships in Eugene and participated in the 4×400 meter relay preliminaries. He clocked 3:07.29 minutes but could not go any further. In 2022, he won the Indian 4×400m relay and mixed relay titles. Later that year, at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, he again competed in the 4×400m relay and finished sixth in 3:05.51.
In 2023, he participated in the Asian Championships in Bangkok. In the 400 meters, he finished fourth in 45.36 seconds. Additionally, he and his team, which included Amoj Jacob, Mijo Chacko Kurian and Rajesh Ramesh, won the silver medal in the relay with a time of 3 minutes 01.80 seconds. They finished second behind Sri Lanka. Muhammed Ajmal and his team including Muhammed Anas, Amoj Jacob and Rajesh Ramesh ran Very fast, completing the 4 x 400m relay in 2 minutes 59.92 seconds at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on August 27, 2023.
