After completing her formal education, Mukta Puntambekar joined the Rehabilitation Center “Muktangan” in Pune, Maharashtra as a Clinical Psychologist. Her father Anil Awachat and his wife Anita Awachat founded Muktangan in 1986, and the organization soon gained support from different sections of civil society, including Marathi cultural icon PL Deshpande. Initially, it was a unit of the Yevada Psychiatric Hospital, but later expanded to a separate facility nearby with male and female wards and specialist assistance in drug addiction recovery. Anil Avachat is also recognized for promoting the anti-superstition movement in Maharashtra.
Mukta Puntambekar often attends various charity events and functions as the chief guest. She follows Gandhian principles and frequently participates in group discussions on addiction.
