Mum, 26, died after ‘barbaric’ Brazilian butt lift surgery ‘she didn’t properly consent to’ in Turkey – The Sun

A MUM of three who died days after undergoing a “Brazilian butt lift” operation did not consent to the procedure, an inquest heard.

Demi Agoglia, 26, died in Turkey after a “barbaric” operation which was fueled by neglect “without adequate pre-operative care and advice”, a coroner has warned.

Demi traveled to Turkey for surgery after seeing celebrity recommendations for Istanbul’s Comfort Zone surgery on social media.

Coroner John Pollard found that “there was no appropriate informed consent” and no appropriate care before or after the operation.

He added: “Something more needs to be done to stop this blatantly barbaric medical practice of such low standards.

“They would certainly not be tolerated in the UK.”

Demi found out about the procedure from influencer ads on social networks that did not emphasize the dangers of BBL.

The mother-of-three was said to be “conscious of the way she looked” and was adamant about having the procedure, which involves taking fat from other parts of her body and injecting it into her hips and buttocks.

Immediately after the operation she was “shaking” and seemed “very, very cold”, Bolton Coroner’s Court was told.

Comfort Zone staff were called to the villa where Demi was staying after she complained of chest tightness.

They checked her blood pressure, but did not examine the operation area or check her heartbeat and pulse, according to the report.

Demi then collapsed in the villa and was taken back to a hospital in Istanbul where she died on January 8, three days after the operation.

Bolton Coroner, John Pollard, ruled that the medical cause of death was a microscopic fat embolism in which tissue leaks into the bloodstream.

Contributing to the conclusion that Demi died as a result of an accident was neglect.

He said: “I believe that in this case there was no proper informed consent, no proper pre-operative care and advice, and no proper post-operative care.

“All of this meant that the overall care was far below the standard expected of this type of treatment, and the lack of care contributed significantly to Demi’s death.”

It later transpired that the Comfort Zone staff who were called to the villa were not qualified nurses.

A failed BBL left me covered in rotting flesh like something out of a horror movie – never able to look in the mirror again

The inquest also heard their “absolutely bizarre” actions included trying to feed Demi pieces of cucumber after she passed out.

The court heard Demi struggled with her mental health and was on medication for ADHD and bipolar disorder.

Her mother, Christine Tydd, said Demi was a “beautiful girl” and did not need the operation, shortly before her daughter traveled to Turkey on January 4 with her partner, Bradley Jones.

Her partner, Bradley Jones, said that he did not want Demi to undergo surgery.

However, she booked the trip months earlier after seeing “some celebrity” endorsing the procedure online.

Giving an expert testimony, dr. Omar Tillo, a consultant plastic surgeon at Harley Street, noted the “absolutely bizarre” actions of Comfort Zone staff.

He added that the BBL process is carried out in the UK “within very strict rules for safe conduct”.

dr. Tillo agreed with Mr. Pollard that it would seem “almost incredible” that the death of a young, able-bodied woman was unrelated to the BBL surgery she underwent.

dr. Usha Chandran, the pathologist who carried out the post-mortem, told the hearing: “I feel that celebrities place a lot of importance on all these cosmetic procedures… and they are done in bad clinics.

“I’m really upset about Demi’s death and I feel that celebrities put a lot of importance on all these cosmetic procedures… and they’re done in bad clinics.”

The inquest heard that the coroner’s office sent multiple emails to the Turkish hospital and the surgeons involved to get statements, but received no response.

What are Brazilian Bum Lifts and why are they so popular?

Buttock augmentation surgery – known as a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) – is used to make the buttocks appear larger, rounder and lifted.

Surgeons transfer fat, inject fillers or insert silicone-filled implants.

It is the fastest growing cosmetic procedure, but also one of the most dangerous, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).

Many patients travel to Turkey or seek unregistered surgeons in the UK and are not fully informed about the risks.

BBLs carry the highest risk of all cosmetic surgeries – with more than one death per 4,000 procedures.

Because of celebrities who undergo such surgeries, many women hope to imitate their appearance.

Clinical psychologist consultant dr. Anu Sayal-Bennett, Chartered Fellow of the British Psychological Society, told the BBC: “Despite so much talk about body positivity, there are pressures on women – and men – to look a certain way.”

Many people travel abroad for the procedure because it is cheaper, and the advertising is “horribly seductive”, combined with the idea of a beach holiday, added Dr. Sayal-Bennett.

Mr Pollard said: “Most inquests are sad in nature. This inquest is particularly so because it involved the death of a young woman with significant mental problems who, despite the fact that she was beautiful and her partner did not think she needed improvement, insisted on BBL operation.

“I discovered that she went to Turkey probably because the process was faster and cheaper than the UK. We know little or nothing about the perioperative situation because the Turkish authorities refused to cooperate with the coronary process.

“I find the post-operative care to have ranged from poor to completely non-existent. When she showed obvious symptoms of serious illness, it was not immediately recognized by her partner, understandably, or by unqualified staff members.

“By the time she got to the hospital, it was honestly too late and she was in an irreparable condition. I think it’s an indication of the poor level of care that she was transported not by ambulance but by taxi, it was always the same taxi.

“I heard extremely helpful evidence from Dr Till who clearly set out all the omissions and deficiencies that he could assess from the evidence and scant documentation available to him.”

The inquest was told there was no record of admission to the intensive care unit or the tests and scans carried out.
