She was on one with her partner while their daughters rode on another in Arcachon Bay on the southwest coast.

The family, also from Angoulême in the southwest, were out with the instructor.

Her partner and children were taken to hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and shock.

Some resorts in France have banned jet skis as Sunday’s horrific accident reopened debate over safety regulations.

Most bans are in place due to noise or environmental damage.

Sammy Maysonnave, winner of the 2022 French jet ski competition, told Sud Ouest newspaper: “Helmets should be compulsory, it’s basic.

“Riders also need more training, maybe a special license.”

Wearing a helmet while riding a jet ski in the country is optional.

Health and safety regulations enforce only wetsuit shorts with a thickness of at least 2mm to protect against internal injuries.

Maysonnave added: “It’s a good start, but the regulations should be stricter.”

To drive a jet ski in France, you must be at least 16 years old and have a special license to operate a boat – unless you are under the supervision of an instructor.

Deaths caused by motorcycle accidents are increasing in France.

In 2023, emergency services had to carry out 55 rescue missions along the coast because of them – a significant increase from 34 in 2022.

The resorts of Arcachon and Lège-Cap-Ferret banned privately owned jet skis this summer due to noise and pollution concerns.

Only approved rental companies can operate vehicles.

Maysonnave, head of the Arguin Jet jet ski association, said the ban was “discriminatory”.

He added: “Sometimes there are accidents, like with cars, but is that a reason to make jet skis illegal? I don’t think so.

“Our freedom is being taken away, but it’s not over yet. We will take legal action against it.”
