Her mother Jaskirat Kaur today pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied murder.

The plea was accepted at Wolverhampton Crown Court by prosecutor Sally Howes KC.

Kaur was remanded in custody to appear for sentencing in the same court on October 25.

The horror unfolded when police were called to the home after a welfare officer could not get an answer.

The inquest previously heard how Shay died from a stab wound to the chest.

Tributes poured in for the youngster, who was a pupil at Brickhouse Primary School.

The school said in a statement: “Shay was a bright, cheerful, fun-loving child who was loved by all and will be greatly missed by us all.

“The school is the heart of the community and we have already started working with our children and staff to support them following this devastating news.”

While Shay’s godmother Kayleigh Colclough also opened up about her pain in a heartbreaking tribute.

She wrote: “I will miss you little girl. My heart hurts.

“I’m not sure how I feel. I feel sick, numb, angry and a failure. I’m completely heartbroken.

“I’m so sorry little girl. I’ll miss you forever, but remember I’m bringing you justice.”

Kaur will be sentenced in October
