Urdu poet Munawwar Rana passed away on January 14, 2024 at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in UP’s Lucknow after cardiac arrest at the age of 71. He suffered from lung and throat infections and was regularly treated for kidney problems for which he was on dialysis.
His funeral was held at Aishbagh Qabristan and namaz-e-janaz was held at Nadvatul Ulama Lucknow.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Rana’s death and said:

Indian screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar said,
Today Urdu, poetry and culture of India has suffered a great loss. This breed is slowly disappearing. First Rahat Saheb and now Munawwar. They cannot be compensated and I pray that their families and relatives are encouraged in this difficult time.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar condoled Munawwar’s death and said:
Late Munawwar Rana was a famous poet. Besides Urdu, he wrote in Hindi and Awadhi. He is the recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu Literature in 2014. Munawwar Rana’s death has caused an irreparable loss to the literary world, especially Urdu literature. I prayed to God to give him an important place in heaven and to give strength to his family to bear this irreparable loss.
