The series Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal first arrived on Netflix earlier this year and many were captivated by the three-part documentary.

The investigative program also aired while its main subject, Alex Murdaugh, was facing trial in South Carolina for the murders of his son Paul and wife Margaret, meaning the Murdaugh family was in the spotlight everywhere.

Randolph Murdaugh Sr

One of the overarching themes of the documentary is how the Murdaugh family had a reputation as a lenient influence on law enforcement. The men in the family, going back generations, traditionally held high positions, including chief prosecutors, attorneys and district attorneys, which gave them a certain level of power.

Randolph Murdaugh Senior was born in 1887 and became a wealthy businessman and co-founded a one-man law firm. In 1920, he became the district attorney of Varnville, South Carolina, a prominent role that would be passed down through generations of the Murdaugh family.

Buster’s son, Randolph Murdaugh III, also joined the family business before retiring in 2006. Randolph III had four children including Randolph IV and Richard Alexander – better known as Alex.

Richard ‘Alex’ Murdaugh

Alex Murdaugh is the subject of most Netflix series depicting the Murdaugh family and their crimes. Alex, who was married to his wife Margaret (Maggie), is another member who joined the family business after graduating from the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Maggie and Alex had two sons, Richard Murdaugh Jr., also known as Buster, and Paul.

Alex was convicted in 2023 of double murder after the bodies of his wife Maggie and son Paul were found dead on their Moselle ranch in Colleton County, South Carolina in June 2021. Maggie, 52, and Paul, 22, were killed. Alex denied his responsibility throughout the trial.

Buster is Alex’s only living son and testified during his father’s murder trial. He told the court that when he spoke to his father on the day of the murders, he sounded “normal” on the phone. This was about 20 minutes after Maggie and Paul were believed to have been killed. Buster then added an hour later, after Alex claimed to have found the bodies, he found his father “destroyed” as he relayed the news to his son on the phone.

On March 2, 2023, Alex was found guilty of double murder and served two life sentences in prison.
