Herold grew up in California beauty salons where her mother worked as a beautician. Her interest in acting developed at the age of six when she was offered the opportunity to perform in various community plays in her hometown. She attended Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose. She was an active member of the school’s performing arts department. Additionally, she was a prominent member of the San Jose Children’s Musical Theater. In 2014, she appeared in the “YouthLive! Talent Promotion” video on Unity Care’s YouTube channel. The YouthLive! Gala is an annual performance-based fundraising event that features vibrant youth fashion, art and talent shows.
Although Herold spent much of her childhood in beauty salons, she grew up in an all-white neighborhood in California and lacked confidence and body positivity. In an interview, she said,
Growing up, I was influenced by Eurocentric notions of beauty, so I always felt like I was ‘different’. It really started to affect how I felt about myself when I was 16, almost 17. I was saying things to myself like, ‘You’re beautiful’ – but I couldn’t help but feel really insecure and wish I didn’t have anything to do with my body and my face.
She later attended Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama in Pittsburgh, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting/Musical Theatre.

In 2017, she made her Broadway debut in the national tour of the hit musical The Book of Mormon, a satirical look at the beliefs and practices of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In the play, Herold plays Nablongi, the daughter of a local leader who wants Cunningham to lead the entire village to Saltlekasiti, where they can find wealth and avoid the horrors of rape, genital mutilation and murder.
In 2018, she made her film debut in the film The Restoration of the Hills, in which she played a background role. In 2019, she played Dymond in the independent romantic drama film Premature.
Later, in the same year, she also played the role of Lulu in the short film Tattooed Heart. She made her television debut in the American anthology series Modern Love in 2019, playing the role of Tammy.

- Herold had a complicated relationship with beauty since she was a child. She was the only black and even mixed race child in a white dominated culture in California. Eventually, her mother helped her overcome this issue and instilled confidence in Herold’s heart. Her mother taught her that beauty is on the inside. In an interview, Herold shared the most important lesson she learned from her mother, she said,
She taught me that it’s not about aesthetics, but more about how to take care of yourself and self-expression. It’s who you are, not how a person looks, that matters. She also taught me how to do a facial massage.”
- She won the 2013 Bay Area High School Musical Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as Olive in the musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. She also won the 2014 California High School Musical Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
