Mylswamy Annadurai is an Indian scientist who is currently the Vice Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Council of Science and Technology (TNSCST) and Chairman of the National Design and Research Forum (NDRF). Prior to this, he served as Director of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), ISRO Satellite Center (ISAC), Bangalore. He has dedicated his life’s work to ISRO for 36 years and is considered the Project Manager for Mangalyaan, Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2. He is best known as the “Indian Man on the Moon”.
Annadurai is an influential columnist and some of his notable columns include Kaiyaruke Nila (2013), which won the SP Adithanar Literary Award, Tamil Weekly, Kungumam and Manvai Mustafa Memorial Science Award Vinnum Mannum” (2021). He is also mentioned in the 10th standard textbook of the Tamil Nadu Board of Secondary Education.

Mylswamy Annadurai was born on Wednesday 2 July 1958 (age 65 years as of 2023) in a village called Kothavadi in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. His zodiac sign is Cancer. He received his primary education from Kothavadi panchayat union school and completed his high school education from Kinathikadavu, Tamil Nadu. In 1980, he received his bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electronics and Communications) from the Government College of Technology, Tamil Nadu, India. In 1982, he pursued a Master of Engineering degree from PSG Institute of Technology and was awarded an honorary doctorate by Anna Technological University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India.
After completing my studies, like most others, I started looking for government jobs and applied to ISRO and the Atomic Energy Department. To my surprise, on the same day, I received interview calls from two places. I chose ISRO because it is closer to my home. ”
In the same year, he joined the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) as Spacecraft Operations Manager for IRS (Indian Remote Sensing)-1A, IRS-1B, INSAT (Indian National Satellite System)-2A and INSAT-2B satellite programmes. He was subsequently appointed as Deputy Project Director for the INSAT-2C, INSAT-2D, 2E, 3B, 3E and GSAT (Geostationary Satellite)-1 projects and was subsequently promoted to Mission Director.
From 2015 to 2018, as Director of ISRO Satellite Center, Annadurai was responsible for the development, launch and operation of 30 satellites. In 2019, he was appointed as the Vice-Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology and Chairman of the Council of the National Design and Research Forum (NDRF) respectively. He has effectively discharged the responsibilities of both positions and has since played an important role in the convergence of science and technology beyond the academic level.

India’s lunar expedition
Chandrayaan 1 and Chandrayaan 2
India’s first lunar landing mission “Chandrayaan-1” launched by the national space agency ISRO has enhanced India’s status among Asian lunar exploration countries including China and Japan. The unmanned lunar expedition was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota on October 22, 2008 at 06:22 IST (00:52 UTC). Chandrayaan-1 successfully entered the lunar orbit on November 8, 2008.

India’s first mission to Mars: Mangalyan
The Mangalyaan or Mars Orbiter mission was launched on November 5, 2013 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. On September 24, 2014, it successfully arrived at Mars. This achievement makes India the first Asian country to enter Mars orbit and the first country to make the first attempt to enter Mars orbit. The “MOM” team (Mars Orbiter Mission) won the Space Pioneer Award in 2015.
Mangalian aims to study Martian surface features, morphology, mineralogy and atmosphere to understand the planet’s climate, geology, origins, evolution and sustainability of life.

Influence
Annadurai was deeply influenced by the late Dr. Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India, popularly known as the “Missile Man of India”.

Awards, Honors and Achievements
Annadurai has received more than 100 awards from various academic and professional institutions, including a Padma Shri and Rajyotsava Prashasti Government Award; several PhDs from elite universities such as Madras University, Anna University, Pondicherry University; National and international awards; social and public forums and more. In 2004, he was awarded the Hariom Ashram Prerit Vikram Sarabhai Research Award by ISRO in recognition of his outstanding contributions in systems analysis and space systems management.
Annadurai has written six books in Tamil, among which “Kaiyaruke Nila” won the SP Adithanar Literary Award in 2013 and “Vinnum Mannum” won the Manvai Mustafa Memorial Science Award in 2021. Annadurai is a keen motivator for enlightening students about science and technology. He frequently travels around the country to meet with students and encourage them to study science.
