Nadia Hussein

Nadiya Hussain is a British television chef, author and television presenter who rose to fame in 2015 after winning the sixth series of BBC’s The Great British Bake Off.

Nadiya Hussain was born on 25 December 1984 as Nadiya Jamir Hussain (born 2020) in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. Her star sign is Capricorn. Nadiya completed her education at Charney High School and Luton Sixth Form College. She was admitted to university but never had the opportunity to study there and decided to work two jobs instead of studying.

Nadiya Hussain’s father is a chef who owns an Indian restaurant in Luton. Nadiya has five siblings – two older sisters, a younger sister and two younger brothers.

Nadiya Hussain married Abdal Hussain in the summer of 2005. They have two sons, Musa and Dawud, and a daughter, Maryam.

After marrying Abdul, Nadia moved to Leeds, England. Nadia enrolled in Child and Youth Studies at the Open University. Nadia loved baking and whenever she felt stressed, she would bake a cake. Nadia wanted to become a social worker after completing her degree, but fate had other plans. Her husband downloaded a registration form for the sixth season of “The Great British Bake Off” for her, and after some persuasion, Nadia decided to participate in the show.

Nadia won the competition in 2015 and has since signed a multi-year contract with the BBC, hosting documentary show The Nadia Chronicles, cooking shows Nadia’s British Food Adventures and Nadia’s Family Favourites. Nadia also co-hosts The Big Family Cooking Showdown with TV presenter Zoe Ball.

Nadiya Hussain has also worked as a columnist for The Times and has signed publishing deals with Penguin Random House and Harlequin. She is a contributing editor to the BBC’s food media brand Good Food. Nadiya has also written a children’s book made up of stories and recipes, Bake Me A Story, published by Hodder Children’s Book. Nadia wrote her first novel, The Secret Lives of the Amir Sisters, with the help of author Ayisha Malik. In 2019, Nadiya’s autobiography, Finding My Voice, was published by Headline Publishing Group. The book also features some of her own recipes and poems.

Nadiya has launched her own homewares collection in partnership with BlissHome. The collection includes a full range of cutlery, spice racks, candles, aprons, tea towels and oven mitts.

  • Nadia Hussain has been awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours. She received the honour for services to broadcasting and culinary arts.
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, Nadia baked cakes for frontline workers at a local hospital to express her gratitude to them.
  • After 14 years of marriage, Nadia and Abdul decided to remarry in December 2018. During the filming of the documentary, Nadia said:

  • Nadia has suffered from panic and anxiety attacks her whole life but didn’t know what to do when she was young. She wrote a series of books for children, illustrated by Ella Bailey. In My Monster and Me she tries to explain that it is normal for children to feel anxious and that they shouldn’t fight it but should embrace it.
