House Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi announced Friday that she will seek re-election to another two-year term in the US House of Representatives in 2024.
“Now more than ever, our City needs us to promote the values of San Francisco and further our recovery,” read a statement released on X. “Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still here, with freedom and justice for ALL. That’s why I’m running for re-election – and I respectfully ask for your vote. -Nancy”
House Democrats have given outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi a new title to honor her 20 years of leadership
Pelosi, 83, will no doubt face questions about her age ahead of the 2024 election, particularly as some of her colleagues in Congress have faced health problems in recent years.
Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, 89, has faced calls to step down before her planned retirement in 2025 since she was admitted to a San Francisco hospital earlier this year to be treated for herpes. Her leave was eventually extended to two months, and upon her return to the Senate, she made comments to a reporter suggesting she was unaware she had ever left.
Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, 81, meanwhile, also expressed concern for his health after he froze during news conferences in two separate incidents that came weeks after he was hospitalized with a concussion. McConnell’s current term is set to end in 2027.

Last November, Pelosi announced that she would step down as speaker of the US House of Representatives, which she announced shortly after the Republican Party regained the majority of seats in the US House of Representatives, which had been controlled by Democrats for the previous four years.
The longtime congresswoman sparked speculation that she might retire when she told CNN’s Anderson Cooper in 2022 that a life-threatening attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi, could affect her decision about her future.
But in an interview with This weekGeorge Stephanopoulos a few days later, Pelosi cleared the air by telling the ABC News host, “I have no plans to retire from Congress.”

Last October, Paul was violently attacked at the couple’s San Francisco home by an intruder who allegedly “confronted the payphone’s husband” and yelled, “Where’s Nancy, where’s Nancy?” according to CNN sources. He allegedly tried to tie up Paul “until Nancy got home,” and was still “waiting for Nancy” when the police arrived.
The US Capitol Police revealed that Nancy was in Washington, DC at the time of the overnight attack, and his alleged assailant, David DePape, has since been charged with a number of felonies, including attempted murder, attempted kidnapping and assault, for which he pleaded not guilty to.
