A long list of National Book Critics Circle Awards biographies is now available. On December 17, the organization shared its first longlist for the genre. From Dec. 16 to Dec. 19, the organization will distribute six long lists for fiction, nonfiction, biography, autobiography, poetry, and criticism published in the United States, in honor of NBCC’s 50th anniversary. The NBCC longlist for bios includes:
- Candida Royalle and the Sexual Revolution: A History from Below by Jane Kamensky
- Candy Darling: Dreamer, Icon, Superstar written by Cynthia Carr
- A Family Romance: John Singer Sargent and the Wertheimers by Jean Strouse
- John Lewis: A Life by David Greenberg
- Monet: A Restless Vision written by Jackie Wullschläger
- Night Flyer: Harriet Tubman and the Dreams of Free People’s Faith by Tiya Miles
- Reagan: His Life and Legend by Max Boot
- Rebel Clinic: The Revolutionary Lives of Frantz Fanon by Adam Shatz
- True Believer: Hubert Humphrey’s Quest for a More Just America James Traub
- A world edited by: Katharine S. White in The New Yorker by Amy Reading

National Book Critics Circle Awards Announces First Longlist for Autobiography
The NBCC Award, the only national literary award chosen directly by literary critics, “honors outstanding writing and fosters a national conversation about reading, criticism, and literature,” according to the organization’s mission statement. The organization also annually awards the John Lenoard Prize for the best debut book in any genre and the Gregg Barrios Book in Translation Prize.

Play now! “NBCC is proud to announce our longlists for the first time in our 50-year history,” NBCC President Heather Scott Partington said in a Dec. 16 announcement. “Unveiling them allows us to honor more writers, translators and books than ever before in one year. The best books of 2024 were stories of resilience, inquiry and imagination. They asked us to question power, art and genre.”
