National Post Day 2023: Every year October 10 is celebrated as National Post Day in India. It was noted that the role played by the Indian Postal Department for more than 150 years was acknowledged. The British brought postal services to India. Lord Dalhousie established it in 1854. It is currently the most widely used postal system in the world and is managed by the Ministry of Communications. India has 9 postal zones, 23 postal circles and one military post. The Indian Post Office uses a 6-digit PIN code system that was implemented there in 1972.

Why are mailboxes red in India?
The red color of British post boxes is as much a part of the iconic nature of the postal service as any other feature. During the early British era, green colored boxes were used. unobtrusive, excessive. But due to its unobtrusiveness, complaints came from people who had a hard time finding them. Around 1874, this led to red mailboxes. Red color has the longest wavelength and shortest frequency, which makes it visible even from a distance.
It took 10 years to complete the repainting program. Also, since then, red has remained the standard color for boxes with a few exceptions.
What are the different types of postage stamps in India?
A total of six different types of postage stamps are used in India. All below are:
Commemorative Stamps: Commemorative stamps are often issued to honor or commemorate a location, occasion, person or item on a significant date, such as an anniversary. The theme of the commemorative stamp is usually stated in print.
Republic Definitive Stamps: These stamps are a regular issue and have been used for a long time for postal purposes. They are made to meet the regular postal needs of the country.
Military stamps: Military stamps are special postage stamps that are issued during wartime or while peacekeeping operations are in progress. During World War II, soldiers often used these stamps to communicate and convey messages to their loved ones.
Miniature Sheets: The term “miniature sheet” refers to a small collection of stamps that are still affixed to the sheet on which they were issued. India has released a series of miniature sheets depicting various aspects of the country’s identity, including famous individuals, notable events, art and culture, history, landmarks, etc.
Se-tenant stamps: Se-tenant stamps are printed next to each other on the same plate. They form a set and are next to each other on the same page, but have different designs, colors, denominations and overprints. They may also have extended or overlapping designs that are present throughout the stamp series.
My Stamp: Sheets of India Post personalized postage stamps are marked with the phrase “My Stamp”. Customized India Post Stamp Sheets are sold under the name “My Stamp”. Customization is achieved by printing a thumbnail of the user’s photo with institutional logos or images of works of art, historical structures, famous tourist destinations, historic cities, wildlife, other creatures, birds, etc., on the stamp template page of your choice.
How does the postal service of India Post work?
The main tasks of the post office include the collection, processing, transmission and delivery of mail. The term “mail” refers to all postal items, including letters, stationery, land transport stationery, packages, ordinary, registered, marked, value and express mail, the content of which has the character of communication.
A total of 154979 post offices across the country collect mail from 579595 post boxes. It is transported across the country by road, rail and air and processed through a network of 389 head offices and 89 national express mail hubs.
The regular line or track was traditionally used to handle the mail, and the principles underlying its operation were based on fundamental laws, resulting in additional defects and customer dissatisfaction. There have been several changes in India Post transportation which include:
- Automated Mail Processing Centers at major locations in the country have been set up to create an automated mail network.
- The department launched a project to optimize the operation of the postal network in order to improve the quality of processing, transmission and delivery of mail.
- Launched in 2008, Project Arrow aims to improve the basic operations of the post office, which includes improving the efficiency of delivery of all types of items.
- Mail Business Center was designed in major cities in 2006 as a key component of a new paradigm for mail management.
