Navjot Singh Sidhu is a former Indian cricketer, commentator, cricket analyst, politician and television personality.

Navjot Singh Sidhu was born on 20 October 1963 in Patiala, Punjab (60 years old as of 2023). He attended Yadavendra Public School in Patiala and then went to Mohindra College, Punjab University, Chandigarh for his graduation. Just like his father, he also wanted to be a cricketer. At the age of 20, he tried out for the Indian national cricket team and was selected for the team.

Sidhu belongs to the Jat Sikh family. His father late Sardar Bhagwant Singh was a cricketer. He also served as Attorney General of Punjab. His mother’s name is Nirmal Sidhu. Sidhu has two sisters, late Neelam Mahajan and Suman Toor.
Sidhu’s husband Navjot Kaur Sidhu is a doctor and politician. The couple has a daughter Rabia Sidhu and a son Karan Sidhu.

Navjot Singh Sidhu made his international cricket debut in 1983, when he scored just 19 runs against the West Indies in a Test match. He played just two Test matches before being dropped from the team. Four years later, he made his debut at the 1987 Cricket World Cup, scoring 73 runs against Australia. He went on to score half-centuries in four of his five matches. His first ODI century came in 1989 against Pakistan in Sharjah. He scored his highest ODI score of 134 against England in 1993. Sidhu announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in December 1999 after playing over 50 Test matches and over 100 ODIs and scoring over 7,000 runs in a career that spanned 18 years.
In 2001, he started his career as a commentator on the sports program “Takeshi’s Castle”. Later, he also began to do commentary for Cricket. He announced his comeback as a commentator for the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Sidhu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2004 and contested the Indian general elections from the Amritsar constituency. He won the election and served until 2014. He was nominated to the Bundestag and resigned in the same year. After leaving the BJP, he finally joined the Indian National Congress (INC) on January 15, 2017.
On July 18, 2021, Navjot Singh Sidhu was appointed as the Chairman of Punjab Congress Committee. He resigned as chairman of the Punjab Congress Committee on September 28, 2021; however, his resignation was not accepted by the high command. On November 5, 2021, he revoked the resignation of the Punjab Congress Party chief. In March 2022, he lost the Amritsar East seat to Jeevanjyot Kaur of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Punjab assembly elections by more than 6,000 votes.

Apart from his journey in cricket and politics, Sidhu has also made special appearances in several films including “ABCD 2”, “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi” and “Mera Pind”. He was a popular contestant in the sixth season of the reality show “Tangshan Masters”, but he had to leave the show early in order to fulfill his political commitments. Sidhu is also popular for being a judge and a regular guest on comedy shows like ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ and ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’.

- In 2006, Sidhu was sentenced to three years in prison for manslaughter following a 1988 road rage incident. However, after he appealed, India’s Supreme Court stayed the execution of his sentence.
- The All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) lodged a complaint with Akal Takht against Sidhu for misrepresenting Gurbani’s words.
- In 2014, Navjot was accused of breaching his contractual agreement with Star India while working as a commentator for the Set Max Indian Premier League.
- Sidhu was one of the special guests who attended the swearing-in ceremony of Imran Khan at Awan Sadr (Presidential Palace) in Islamabad, Pakistan, on August 18, 2018. People embraced Pakistan’s army chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, for which he was harshly criticized in India.

- On May 19, 2022, Sidhu was sentenced to one year in prison for the road rage case. The incident took place in 1988 when Sidhu and his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu got into an argument with Gurnam Singh, a resident of Patiala, over a parking space. According to sources, after an argument, Sidhu and his friends dragged Gunam Singh from the car and beat him, after which he died in the hospital. In 2018, the Supreme Court ordered Sidhu to pay a fine of Rs. 1,000; however, Gurnam Singh’s family wanted a harsher punishment and asked the Supreme Court to review its 2018 order. He was released from Patiala Central Jail about 10 months after he was sentenced to one year in prison by the Supreme Court.
