News about Nawal Al Maghafi

Hours after the student’s death in London 15 years ago, the son of the billionaire who fled to Yemen confirmed his involvement to the BBC. Martine Vik Magnussen, 23, was found dead in a basement on Great Portland Street in 2008, her body hidden under rubble.

Farouk Abdulhak, who is wanted internationally and is on the Met Police’s most-wanted list, had never spoken about the case before. He revealed to the BBC that Vik Magnussen died as a result of a “failed sexual accident”.

When Martine’s body was found, I was also a student, and the news about it seriously shocked me, especially since the main suspect in her murder was a Yemeni, and I myself am from Yemen.

So it was one of the first questions I tackled when I started working for the BBC as a journalist in 2011. Finding a solution for Martine’s family, who believe she passed an international law test, was my main goal. Yemen and the UK do not have an extradition treaty.

But I couldn’t get in touch with Farouk Abdulhak until last year. I started corresponding with him on social media. Over the years, he received inquiries from hundreds of journalists, but never responded. But my Yemeni background helped me gain his trust. He sent me the first of what would turn out to be a series of insightful texts ten days after we started texting. He admitted: “I did something when I was younger, it was a mistake.”

In the tens of thousands of text messages and phone messages he sent me over five months, he never used Martine’s name or mentioned that she had passed away; instead, he called everything “incidents” or “accidents.”

The Norwegian student died from “pressure on the neck”, which “may suggest that she was strangled, restrained or asphyxiated”, according to the coroner’s report, which revealed how she was brutally murdered. 43 cuts and scratches were noted on her body, many of which were “typical of assault-type injuries or sustained in combat.”

Martine wanted to work as a banker in the city, and Farouk and Martine attended the Regent’s Management School in London. In the early hours of March 14, 2008, Diana and Farouk were celebrating the end of a check-up at the luxurious Maddox nightclub in Mayfair when her friends last saw her.
