63rd Foundation Day of NCERT 2023
NCERT Foundation Day 2023: National Council of Educational Research and Training has been granted university status, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced while addressing a gathering at the 63rd NCERT Foundation Day celebrations. This decision is in line with the council’s well-established reputation and indisputable contribution to the field of school education.
Last year in September, NCERT approached the University Grants Commission (UGC) seeking ‘Deemed University’ status. The council applied in the “de navo” category. As an apex organization for school education, NCERT undertakes various activities and programmes, including educational research and innovation, curriculum development and development of text and teaching-learning materials.

Enriched role of NCERT in the educational landscape
The council has the highest authority in making textbooks for school education in India. Also, NCERT plays a key role in the implementation of the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The Council is actively involved in educational research, fostering innovation, curriculum design and creating core teaching and learning materials and pedagogical resources. NCERT undertakes various endeavors and initiatives including educational research and innovation, curriculum development as well as formation of study materials and teaching and learning aids.

The Union Education Minister has also asked top officials, including Secretary School Education Department and NCERT Director DP Saklani to develop a national curriculum framework for teacher education. Earlier this month, the final version of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for school education was published.
Talking about the development of textbooks, Pradhan said the council also has to come up with small content on recent national events like the successful launch of Chandrayaan-3 and effective management of the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
