Entering the world of crime

As a teenager, Sehrawat started committing petty crimes like robbery. He was first arrested in 2004 for robbery in Haryana. Bawana served three months in jail and was later released on bail. Soon after, he was arrested again in 2005 for possessing weapons without a license. This time, he served two years in Delhi’s Tihar jail. While serving his sentence in Tihar jail, Bawana met Dawood’s close associate Fazal-ur-Rahman, who operated in Malaysia, Dubai, Nepal and India, and spent several months with him. From Fazal, Bawana learnt the ropes of extortion, i.e. how to evade the police and how to use technology without being tracked. It was Rahman who reportedly convinced Bawana to get into the extortion business by sharing Dawood’s story and his relationship with him.

Collaboration and competition with Neetu Daboda

Neeraj rose to fame after falling out with his former partner in crime Surendra Malik alias Nitu Daboda. While Neeraj was still a newbie in the extortion business, Nitu had already made a name for himself in the criminal world. They had teamed up and had been committing robberies, murders and extortions together for years. In 2011, Ajay alias Sonu Pandit, a resident of Tatsar village in Delhi, joined them. Slowly, Pandit and Neeraj became very close, which became a reason for Neeraj and Nitu to drift apart. Nitu felt that Sonu was inciting Neeraj against him and the two might kill him. In 2012, Nitu kidnapped Sonu and brutally murdered him. This incident led to Neeraj and Nitu parting ways. Bawana left Nitu and formed his own gang. Since then, many gang wars have taken place between the two gangs. Many people have lost their lives in the gang fights. Daboda was later killed in a clash with the Special Cell of the Delhi Police, but the gang fights continued.

Neeraj was initially lodged in Tihar Jail’s Ward No. 1 along with other inmates. However, he was later shifted to the high security ward (Ward No. 2) after the Delhi Police informed the jail authorities that he was in touch with gang members inside and outside the jail. As of 2021, he is still running his gang from inside the jail. His gang, which consisted of more than 50 associates, is suspected of committing murders, robberies, extortion and property theft in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand regions.
