Neethu Vanajakshi was born a boy and grew up in a conservative family. At age 11, he began to understand his gender identity. However, he kept the matter a secret for several years. Later, when he moved to Bangalore to study, he met some transgender people there and became friends with them. He later began receiving hormonal treatments to transition, as well as medications and surgery to complete his transition to a transgender woman. He also changed his name from Manjunath to Neethu Vanajakshi.

After realizing his third gender identity, Neetu hid it for several years as he was the only son and had the responsibilities of the family. He worries that his family will not accept him as a third gender. Later, he decided to fulfill his duties to his family before revealing his gender identity to them. Speaking about it in an interview, he said,
When I came to Bangalore in 2007, I saw many people, especially transgender people, begging. I firmly believe that if I fulfill my responsibilities to my family, complete my studies and show my talents, they will accept me. Then gender no longer matters. “
After completing his studies, he became a successful tattoo artist. Later, he opened a beauty salon for his sister and a restaurant for his mother. Then he felt that he had fulfilled his responsibilities to his family and decided to disclose his third gender identity in front of his family. Initially, he revealed his gender identity to his sister in 2016 by taking him to an LGBTQ party. His sister found it hard to believe at first, but later accepted his third gender identity. Later, when he told his mother about this, she fell into a long period of depression. However, she later accepted him.
