Neve Campbell Reveals She’s Returning to Scream After Departing Last Sequel: ‘Sidney Prescott Is Coming Back!’

Neve Campbell returns to Scream franchise.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, the 50-year-old actress shared a photo of the script and wrote, “So excited to announce this news!!! Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!!”

“It’s always been a great honor and privilege to play Sidney in the Scream movies,” Campbell continued. “My gratitude for these films and what they meant to me has never waned. I am very happy and proud to say that I was asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I could not be more thrilled!! !”

Campbell also confirmed that Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original in 1996 Scream movie as well scream 2 and scream 4, will direct the upcoming seventh installment. Williamson made his directorial debut in 1999 with Teaching Mrs. Tingle.

“While I’ve been incredibly fortunate to make these films with horror master Wes Craven and the wonderfully talented team of Matt and Tyler, I’ve dreamed for years of how amazing it would be to make one of these films with Kevin Williamson at the helm,” she wrote. “And now it’s happening, Kevin Williamson to direct Scream 7!”

“This was his baby and his brilliant mind created this world. Kevin is not only an inspiration as an artist, but a dear friend for many years,” she wrote.

“To the amazing Scream fans out there, I hope you’re as excited as I am. See you on set @kevwilliamson,” Campbell concluded.

Williamson wrote on Instagram: “It’s been almost 30 years since my first screenplay, The Scream, was directed by the legendary Wes Craven. I never would have predicted what it would become. Or that I would be directing the seventh installment of the franchise.”

He continued: “I am overwhelmed with gratitude and excitement and can’t wait to embark on this journey with Neve and the entire Scream family as we bring back Sidney Prescott in the next chapter of the Scream franchise. Thank you to all the Scream fans. You are the gift that keeps on giving. @nevecampbell See you soon on the set.”

Campbell first played Sidney in the 1996 film Scream and returned for each of the sequels except the sixth entry in 2023.

The actress revealed in 2022 that she had made a “very difficult decision” not to return for the sixth film due to contractual disagreements. She said at the time that she “felt that the offer that was presented to me was not equal to the value that I have brought to the franchise” for more than two decades.

Campbell later told PEOPLE that she would love to return Scream if the offer is right.

“I don’t know if I’m done for good,” she told PEOPLE in August 2022 of any potential comeback. “It would really depend on what they come to us with next time. It would have to be different. It would have to be a different attitude, and I’m not sure that’s going to happen.”

“If they came to me with a number that felt right, respectfully, that was consistent with my value that I brought to the franchise, I would be willing to consider [returning in the future]”, she added then.

Seventh Scream the film has seen a few shakeups in recent months. Lead actress Melissa Barrera was fired from the sequel in November after the studio addressed her social media posts, followed by actress Jenna Ortega.

Happy death day director Christopher Landon had previously been tapped to direct the seventh film, but announced in December that he had left the project, writing to X that a “dream job” “turned into a nightmare.”
