However, Jake learns that Ryan was disqualified in his semi-final match for using an illegal eye gouging. Jake Tyler, along with his mother Margaret and younger tennis prodigy brother Charlie, recently moved from Iowa to Orlando, Florida. The move is intended to support Charlie’s tennis career. However, Jake carries the emotional burden of his father’s tragic death in a drunk driving accident, which makes him the target of ridicule from his classmates.
Struggling to fit in at his new school, Jake witnesses what appears to be a bullying incident involving Max Cooperman. Jake tries to interfere, but Max and his friends discover that it was a consensual mixed martial arts fight.
Later, Jake gets into a fight with the school’s MMA champion and Baja Miller’s boyfriend, Ryan McCarthy, at a party. Reluctantly, Jake agrees to fight after Ryan taunts him about his father’s death. Unfortunately, Ryan easily defeats Jake, and the humiliating video is circulated around the school.
Max befriends Jake and introduces him to the world of MMA. Max connects Jake with Jean Roqua, a skilled MMA instructor. Impressed by Jake’s determination and willpower, Roqua accepts him as a student. However, Roqua makes it a strict rule that Jake is not allowed to fight outside the gym, warning him that any violation will result in his expulsion.
Jake’s anger towards Ryan initially hinders his progress in training under Roqua. Baja tries to apologize for her part in the fight, but is met with Jake’s refusal to forgive her. When Ryan shows no remorse and physically threatens Baja, Jake steps in to protect her. Ryan insults Jake about his father, causing Baja to break up with him.
Fueled by rage, Jake gets into a fight with a group of men during a road rage incident, which is caught on video and spreads around the school, raising Jake’s profile. Ryan, feeling provoked, confronts Jake and brutally abuses him in the bathroom, challenging him to compete in the Beatdown underground fighting tournament, where Ryan is the current champion.
After discovering Jake’s unauthorized fight, Roqua kicks him out of the gym, stressing that he is not welcome back. However, after Jake comes forward and apologizes, Roqua eventually allows him to return. Roqua ramps up Jake’s training regimen to prepare him for the Beatdown. During training, Roqua shares his tragic story, revealing that his brother, also an MMA fighter, was killed by a troublemaker he had previously defeated.
Blaming herself, Roqua shares her guilt with Jake. Meanwhile, Jake reconciles with Baja and begins a relationship with her. As the Beatdown approaches, Jake becomes hesitant, taking it as something Ryan wants.
However, when Ryan brutally attacks Max and leaves him on Jake’s doorstep, Jake’s perspective changes. After taking Max to the hospital, Jake asks Roque for guidance. Although they initially argue over Jake’s decision to participate, Roqua eventually relents, reminding Jake that he is “in control of the outcome.
