Next exam: NMC issues regulations on national high school exam
NExT Exam: The National Health Commission (NMC) recently released guidelines for the NExT exam. The entrance exam will be a common exit exam for medical students who will act as the degree holder as well as the entrance exam. NExT will be conducted in two steps: 1 and 2 and candidates will have to pass the exam within 10 years of taking the MBBS course. Both NExT steps 1 and 2 will be conducted twice a year and those admitted to the MBBS course in 2019 will be the first batch to take the exam.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi will hold NExT Step 1 in May and November. They will be allowed to join NExT Step 2 after completing their internship and exams will be held on June and December. The full schedule of the NExT exam, internship, and broad graduate admissions process will be published by NMC and other bodies authorized by the Commission.

NEXT Step 1 Exam format
NExT Step 1 will be a high quality MCQ based comprehensive computer test. The entrance exam will have six subject exams and application aspects of all other MBBS subjects including Forensic and Toxicology (FMT), Community Medicine will be incorporated into clinical subjects related.
Exams in all six subjects will be held over five days with a day off on Mondays and Wednesdays. Each paper will contain 10% entries for applied aspects of related topics. Check out the difficulty below for the number of questions in the test and the time allotted for each subject:

NEXT Step 2 Paper Template
NExT step 2 will be a comprehensive clinical/practical examination that will be conducted upon completion of the internship to assess clinical diagnostic competence, patient review and clinical decision making, skills practical and communicative skills required for the practice of modern medical systems, especially in India. A total of seven subjects will be assessed in NExT Step 2. These include:
- Medicine and related topics
- Surgery and related topics
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- pediatrics department
- Otorhinolaryngology
- ophthalmology
- Orthopedics, physical therapy and rehabilitation (PMR)

Q1: Is there any limit on the number of hits to the NExT test?Reply: According to the official announcement, “there is no limit on the number of appearances for NExT Step 1 as long as the candidate has passed both the NExT Step 1 and NExT Step 2 exams within 10 years of taking the MBBS course . There is no limit to the number of times you can take the NExT Step 1 Performance Enhancement Test provided that these Performance Enhancement Tests are taken after completing the NExT Step 2. Candidates are not eligible to take the NExT Step 1 Performance Enhancement Test until completion of NExT 2.” |
Q2: What is the 10-year rule for the NExT exam? Reply: Candidates who have completed the final MBBS III/MBBS course from an NMC approved/accredited medical college will have to appear for NExT step 1. After confirming this, they will be required to do an internship for the following then they can appear for NExT step 2. As a rule, applicants must solve NExT (Steps 1 & 2) within 10 years of taking the MBBS course. |
Question 3: How long is NExT Step 1 valid? Reply: Step 1 NExT scores to determine eligibility for admission to specialist graduate courses will be valid for five years. However, if a candidate re-appears in the NExT Step 1 cycle, the previous NExT Step 1 scores will not be valid for ranking determination for admission to the Broad Major Graduate Courses and only those achieved in the final exam at NExT. steps will be taken into account. |
Question 4: What if any candidate fails to pass NExT 2? Reply: In case a candidate fails to pass one of seven subjects or more and is forced to retake those subjects. They can take the NExT step 2 additional exam, which will be held twice a year.
