Career
As for his professional career, he was selected in the fifth round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft by The Kansas City Royals. He made his professional debut with the Burlington Royals. Appalachian Level is the minor league affiliate of the Kansas City Royals in the Burlington Royals game. He was with the Royals for the entire 2016 season. In 2016, he batted .281 with six home runs, 29 RBIs and 24 stolen bases in 62 games.
He batted.279 with two home runs, 38 RBIs, 24 stolen bases and a.704 OPS in 129 games for the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Northwest Arkansas Naturals in 2017. The Royals assigned him to the Surprise Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League at the end of the season. He was promoted to the Omaha Storm Chasers in June after starting the season with Northwest Arkansas.
In 130 games between the two clubs, Nicky hit .308/.382/.417 with nine home runs and 53 RBIs. He returned to Omaha to start the new year. On May 14, his contract was chosen and he entered the first league for the first time. He made his debut that night against the Texas Rangers. He batted .201 with one home run and 13 RBIs in 56 games for the Kansas City Royals in 2020. He had the lowest slugging percentage of any qualified hitter in the AL, at 266.
During spring training in 2021, he changed his number from 1 to 8 so that Jarrod Dyson could wear No. 1. After hitting .118 in 34 at-bats during spring training, he was optioned to Triple-A Omaha and was expected to take Whit Merrifield more as a starting second baseman. However, after shortstop Adalberto Mondes was injured in the final game of spring training, he was placed on the injured list and Nicky began the regular season as the Royals’ shortstop. On May 25, Adalberto was activated and made his season debut, but on June 6 he was placed on the disabled list due to a secondary injury.
He was named to the Royals’ All-Star team as the top shortstop despite not playing in a single game this season as the team moved Adalbert to shortstop and Merrifield to second base. On August 19, Nicky hit his first home run of the season in a 3–6 loss to the Houston Astros. He finished the 2021 season with 78 runs, 43 RBIs, 22 stolen bases and a .300 batting average, becoming the first Royals regular hitter to hit .300 or more in a season. He led all qualifying AL shortstops in fielding percentage with a .987.
