Nicolás Maduro is a politician by profession. He is better known as the President of Venezuela since 2013. However, his presidency is in doubt since 2019. As for his professional background, Maduro started out as a bus driver. He later became a trade union leader, and in 2000 he was elected to the National Assembly.
Furthermore, Maduro was appointed to several positions by President Hugo Chávez. Maduro also served as foreign minister from 2006 to 2013. He also served as Venezuela’s vice president from 2012 to 2013 under Chávez.
After the death of President Chávez on March 5, 2013, this politician assumed the presidency. Maduro won a special presidential election in 2013 as the candidate of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, receiving 50.62 percent of the vote. This politician has ruled Venezuela by decree since 2015, using powers granted to him by the ruling party’s legislature.
After shortages and a lower standard of living in Venezuela, protests began in 2014 that escalated into repression against dissidents, daily marches across the country, and a decline in the popularity of this politician. Then, in 2015, the National Assembly was elected, led by the opposition.
