News from Nicole Auerbach

Nicole Auerbach, a 2011 Michigan Daily graduate, earns praise from her co-workers and former colleagues for being fearless, enthusiastic and collected. A senior writer for The Athletic and the youngest recipient of the 2020 National Sports Media Sportswriter of the Year Award, Auerbach exemplifies the qualities a woman needs to succeed in the sports media industry.

Sport has always played an important role in Auerbach’s life. As a child, Auerbach played softball, tennis and basketball, and she watched a variety of sports with her father. However, when she entered Michigan as a freshman, her love of journalism was born.

As Auerbach says, “a fluke” led her to The Michigan Daily. Auerbach covered a variety of sports for The Daily during his tenure. She became especially passionate about writing about college football and basketball, a love that lived through her professional career.

Whatever sport Auerbach followed, it was clear that he had a special work ethic and talent. His companions knew it too. Former Michigan Daily contributor Joe Stapleton told The Daily: “You could tell from the start that she knew (what) to do and she was hungry to learn.” At The Daily, Auerbach established a regimen that honed his writing skills and allowed him to network with other professionals.

That’s how you get there, according to Stapleton. “You learn things from qualified professionals and they understand that you want to learn from them, so they will help you and you can create your own opportunities.” During his time at The Daily, Auerbach learned how to build relationships and excel within the business. This style of development also taught him how to meet challenges and overcome them.

In her junior or senior year, Nicole ran for sports editor,” Stapleton said. “It was very sad that she didn’t get it. I really like how she handled it because it was such a blow. She basically dusted herself off, came back and continued to do a fantastic job.” The task that Auerbach continued to set was not only observed by his colleagues, but also appreciated by the world of work.

Auerbach interned for USA Today between his junior and senior years at Michigan. He stayed longer with the company thanks to the dedication and experience he showed during his internship because he got a job opportunity after graduation.
