Nijaree Canady News

NiJaree Canady of Stanford was already somewhat familiar with USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium when she arrived to the Women’s College World Series this week.

Canady, who was up in Topeka, Kansas, played softball for the Alliance All-Stars, a college exposure team that often played at the facility north of Oklahoma City. And each June when the WCWS came around, Canady would watch from home to witness the biggest names in college softball assemble on the same pitch she had grown accustomed to.

This week, Canady recalled, “I always watched it.” It was something that my entire family eagerly anticipated.

Canady was one of those stars this week as he visited the Hall of Fame Stadium one more. The freshman fireballer with the lowest ERA in college softball wowed in her WCWS debut on Thursday.

On Day 1 of the 2023 World Championship Series, Canady defeated Oklahoma and its top-ranked offence, striking out seven, issuing a walk, and surrendering two runs (one earned) over 5.0 innings in front of a crowd of 12,379 spectators. She consistently reached a top speed of 75 MPH and capped the Sooners’ 8.38 runs per game lineup until Jayda Coleman’s two-run single in the fifth inning gave OU the lead and secured a 2-0 victory.

Thursday’s outcome ultimately favoured the Sooners. However, no star shone brighter than Stanford’s hard-throwing right-hander on Day 1 at Hall of Fame Stadium.

“We knew what we were running into in the way of NiJa,” OU coach Patty Gasso said. She has developed into one of the most forceful ball throwers and ball-movers I’ve ever seen.

Canady and senior All-American Alana Vawter’s pitching helped the Cardinal make their first World Championship Series participation in Oklahoma City since 2004. The Stanford team had a combined record of 36-9 going into the week.

Coach Jessica Allister of Stanford mentioned a right-handed lineup by OU as an argument for starting Canady in the game’s opening pitch on Thursday.

NiJa’s hitting average against righties was.83,.63, or something similar, so Allister stated, “We’re going to give her that opportunity.” “I’m going to pick her all day against a lineup that is heavy on righties.”

From her very first pitches to Coleman, which reached the mid-70s, Canady affirmed that choice. Canady (16-2) shut the door on the Sooners in both innings after allowing baserunners in each of the first two innings. When Canady struck out Tiare Jennings to end the third, she had struck out five batters overall. Canady had ploughed through an OU lineup that had been rather weak before Thursday.
