Nik West Wikipedia, Husband, Wedding Dress, Prince, Songs, Net Worth, Songs, Net Worth, Youtube – It’s refreshing to see successful women playing instruments in a male-dominated field. Nik West, an electric bassist and singer who previously collaborated with cult music icon Prince, is a case in point.

The Arizona native began playing rhythm guitar at age 13, and after hearing Michael Jackson’s Wanna Be Starting Something in high school, he fell in love with bass. He has collaborated with well-known figures in the field such as Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart and John Mayer. He is known for his contagious enthusiasm and his distinctive approach. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler even lent his support, saying, “Holy Funkadelic, I felt this girl’s vibe the first time I was in her presence.

We spoke to West, the bassist, about her musical influences, her first meeting with Prince and the one piece of advice she still remembers from him ahead of her set at the Singapore International Jazz Festival starting tomorrow.

How will your performance be in SingJazz?

Lots of energy and funk. I really enjoy engaging the audience and keeping them entertained. Prince gave me many DVDs of remastered versions of his old music videos. They inspire me because I see them often. As a result, Prince’s performances have greatly influenced what I do, as well as how I play and perform. Those who have never seen Prince perform live will no doubt be in for a treat.

How did you meet Prince, with whom you worked very closely?

He discovered me on YouTube. He tried to contact me for a year, but no one had my phone number. Prince asked one day during rehearsal, “Does anyone know how to contact Nick West?” John Blackwell, his drummer, did it.

Prince contacted me later that night and invited me to play with him the next day. He was petrified; in fact, he didn’t even want to go because he was so scared. I didn’t think he was talented enough right now because I felt it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity. I felt like I needed to practice more because Prince was still out of my league. As soon as I walked into the studio, he got me over my fear.

What was it like working with such a legendary person?

Prince was brilliant. He showed me how to do unusual actions. He just wanted me to be authentic, not try to fit in with others. Take inspiration from other people, he advised, but be original. Be authentic. The only thing I got out of working with him was that. He just encouraged me to be authentic. He let me be who I am: crazy.

Who else do you listen to musically?

Tina Turner, Larry Graham, and David Bowie. Sting and Paul McCartney, for sure. My record company saw me first and said, “Oh my gosh, a woman playing bass and fronting a band, that’s never really happened before in the pop world.” Aside from Paul McCartney and Sting, no one has gained popularity because of it. And I added: “Since it has been done, it can be done again.” So these two musicians would be my main musical influences, in my opinion.

What music are you listening to right now?

It’s pretty weird because even though I like music, I don’t really listen to it. However, a lot of what Bruno Mars produces has been pretty good to me. It is extremely modern and at the same time classic, which is truly special. Emily’s D+Evolution and Esperanza Spalding albums. I really enjoy his music because it is fusion and avant-garde, but accessible to the general public. And no, I’m not just saying that because we’re close.
