Nikkie de Jager is a Dutch makeup artist and beauty vlogger who is popular for her YouTube channel ‘NikkieTutorials’. She came into the spotlight in 2015 with her YouTube video ‘The Power of Makeup’ which went viral and inspired many people to show how they look with and without makeup.

Nikkie de Jager was born on Wednesday, March 2, 1994, in Wageningen, the Netherlands (26 years old in 2020). She is a transgender woman. At the age of six, she began to grow her hair long and dress like a girl. At the age of fourteen, she began to take hormones and growth inhibitors, and by the age of nineteen, she had completely transformed into a woman. After that, she studied professional hairdressing and makeup courses at B College in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Later, she also studied a course at the hairdressing school of the WE-R institution.

Her mother, Saskia Spee (or Saskia De Orchidee), is the owner of the Dutch cosmetics company Het Cosmeticahuis. Her brother is named Emile de Jager.
In 2010, Nikkie’s mother Saskia De Orchidee married Jeroen Spee, who had two sons from his previous marriage: Ravi Spee and Mikai Spee (who died of lymphoma in 2018).

In an interview, Nikkie revealed that she started filming makeup tutorials after watching Sandy Gold’s “Wake Up Makeup” video, in which she recreated Lauren Conrad’s makeup look. Obsessed with Lauren Conrad’s eyeliner, Nikkie De Jager spent her days watching MTV’s The Hills, an American pseudo-reality television series, and was inspired by the beauty of American actress Lauren Conrad, who is one of the main characters in the show. In an interview, she said,
I saw Wake Up and Make Up by Sandy Gold, and she filmed herself waking up and putting on her makeup to look like Lauren Conrad. I was obsessed with it… So I found this world of beauty gurus who were teaching, and it was a very small community at the time. From there, I started practicing, going to drugstores, buying stuff—that’s how it all started.”
In 2008, at the age of 14, she uploaded her first YouTube video, “Makeup Tutorial; My First Official YouTube Look.”
After that, she uploaded various makeup tutorial videos, and eventually, NikkieTutorials became a household name in the Netherlands, gaining a lot of views and subscribers. Later, she got in touch with makeup artist Pascale Tesser, who teaches professional makeup at B Academy in Amsterdam. In 2010, she studied makeup courses with Pascale Tesser at B Academy and also took the Hair on Set: Level 1 course. After joining Pascale Tesser’s Colourfool agency in 2011, she began her journey as a professional makeup artist and worked for Dutch TV series such as Hollands & Benelux’s Next Top Model, Miljoenenjacht and The Face. In addition to TV series, she also worked for fashion magazines such as Marie Claire, Linda, Talkies and Fashionista. In order to master the art of hair design, Nikkie enrolled in the hairdressing school of the WE-R agency in 2013. In the same year, she was selected as the lead makeup artist for the fashion reality series “I Can Make You a Supermodel”. In 2014, she quit her job at Pascale Tesser’s Colourfool agency to become a freelance hairstylist and makeup artist. In 2015, she became famous for her YouTube video “The Power of Makeup”, in which she covered half of her face with makeup and left the other half bare. The YouTube beauty star risked her reputation to prove that makeup is for fun and that people should never hate their natural look.
In 2016, she launched a collection of products in collaboration with Too Faced Cosmetics. The collection included a black stretch mark pencil, liquid eyeliner and eyeshadow palette inspired by the video “The Power of Makeup”. Other cosmetic brands she has collaborated with include Ofra and Maybelline. In 2017, she made her television debut as a participant in the Dutch game show The Great Escape. In the show, participants compete or fight against each other to escape from so-called escape rooms.
She appeared as a contestant in reality shows Wie is de Mol? (2019), Weet Ik Veel (2019) and Thank You For The Music (2019), among others. In January 2019, Nikkie de Jager became the first global artistic consultant for the high-end cosmetics brand “Marc Jacobs Beauty”. Later, in the same year, she uploaded a makeup tutorial video with American pop singer Lady Gaga to promote Lady Gaga’s makeup brand Haus Laboratories, a vegan and cruelty-free cosmetics brand. In May 2020, she became a co-host of the show Eurovision Song Contest: Europe Shine. In August 2020, Nikkie De Jager launched her own eyeshadow palette in collaboration with the cosmetics brand Beauty Bay. In 2020, she was the winner of the Dutch reality TV game show Wie is de Mol? (2020).

- In 2017, American makeup artist Jeffree Star accused Too Faced Cosmetics of not paying NikkieTutorials for their collaboration. According to YouTube channel Here for the Tea, Nikkie de Jager was paid a flat fee of $50,000 for her collaboration with NikkieTutorials, which sold over 150,000 products priced at $56 each, generating revenue of approximately $8.4 million. Although she was supposed to be paid after six months, during which she was not allowed to work with other brands, Too Faced reportedly paid her after nine months. In addition to being underpaid, Nikkie also revealed that the quality of the products almost ruined her career. In October 2019, Nikkie De Jager first spoke out about the controversy via a tweet, which read:
I signed a contract with TF because I was naive and didn’t know better. Ultimately, I signed the contract and it was my own fault – but what I will never forgive is that they ‘allegedly’ changed the quality of the palettes behind my back. There were thousands of negative reviews and I had no idea.”

In the video clip, Nikkie also said that someone threatened her to reveal her gender. The video caused a huge response in the LGBT community, and Nikkie was comforted by fans and other YouTube users.
- In January 2020, Nikkie De Jager became famous through her coming out video, and then she appeared as a guest on The Ellen Show and talked about her experience of coming out as transgender. Later, in an interview, she revealed that she was abused on The Ellen Show. In the interview, she said that the host of the show, Ellen, was unkind and resentful towards her. Nikkie de Jager told the Dutch media “&C Magazine” that on the set, she was not allowed to use the nearest bathroom because it was reserved for the Jonas Brothers.
