Nilam Hindocha is from Uganda, East Africa. She married Vinod Hindocha and moved to Sweden in the 1970s after Uganda’s president expelled Asians from the country. In Sweden, she went picking strawberries to earn money and help her husband raise household expenses. Anni Dewani and her siblings were born and raised in Sweden. In 2006, Neelam suffered from uterine cancer. Anne cared for Nilam Hindocha while he was hospitalized and skipped school for a year after finishing college. Nilam Hindocha was recovering from cancer when she heard the news that her daughter Anni Dewani had been kidnapped and murdered.
Statements to the media during the trial
During the court trial in Anne’s murder case, doctors advised Nilam Hindocha to get enough rest. However, during some of the trials, she went to court and heard Shrien Dewani’s lawyers urging the judge to spare Shrien because of his failing health. Speaking to a media outlet, Nilam Hindocha expressed how the health of the family members who are bearing the pain of Anne’s death is going. she says,
Schlien’s lawyers always said, “His health, his health, his health.” Did she think about our health? “
In 2013, it was widely rumored in the media that Shrien Dewani was suspected of being involved in the murder of Anni Dewani and was arrested by the Cape Town police. Neelam said in an interview with the media that her family was very surprised to hear such claims from the South African police. Neelam added that she also heard that post-traumatic stress and depression affected the health of Shirin, who was admitted to a mental hospital. She expressed sympathy for him and said:
I feel sorry for Slim, he is my son-in-law and he is as devastated by this as we are. He was sick and I felt sorry for him. His life was shattered forever. But he will have a chance to get better. Where is my Anne? What about her life? “
Nilam Hindocha speaks out on daughter’s murder
Nilam Hindocha further claimed that Shrien Dewani loved Anni very much and Nilam and his family did not forget that Anni’s husband loved Anni deeply but killed her. Neelam said Shrien Devani did not attend the South African court trial, leaving the entire story behind the murder unclear. she says,
I lost my beautiful daughter. Unless he tells me the whole story – the stress is killing me. “
In a statement to the media, Nilam Hindocha suspected that Annie and Shrien went to a secluded place in South Africa where no one goes at night. She wonders how Annie could give the nod to visit such an unsafe place in South Africa when Schring already realized that the Gugulethu area was not a good place to be. she says,
Shi Lin knew that the place was not good. No one really goes there at night. They were staying at the Point Grace Hotel and she would love the nightlife there. She would never suggest that they go to Gugulethu in the middle of the night. “
According to Nilam Hindocha, Anne was initially not interested in Shrien Dewani. It was Slim who chased her, chased her, and always called her. She described that Anne and Slim met through their mutual friends in London, and that Slim impressed Anne with expensive gifts and flowers. She also recounted how Slim proposed to Anne Devaney on a private plane to Paris. According to Nilam Hindocha, she was disturbed the day Anni Dewani died. Nilam said in an interview with the media that this is a mother’s instinct. She kept calling Annie that day and on the other side, Annie told Neelam for the last time that she had a lot to say but she would say it when she got home. she says,
I had a feeling the day she died – it’s a mother’s instinct. I just kept telling myself, “Call Annie.” It was an uneasy feeling. I called her and she said she had a lot to say but it could wait. That was the last time we spoke. “

According to Nilam Hindocha, Shrien called Vinod Hondocha on November 13, 2010 and told Vinod that Annie had been kidnapped and attacked. Shrien also kept apologizing for not taking care of our daughter. she says,
When Slim called us in the early hours of the morning after we learned that Anne had been attacked, he cried and kept saying, “I couldn’t take care of her, I’m sorry.”
