As a senior, Pickens had 69 catches for 1,368 touchdowns. He was also an Under Armor All-American in 2019. He initially committed to Auburn University for college football, but then transferred to the University of Georgia. That same season, he completed 36 passes for 513 yards and led the team with eight touchdowns in an eight-game season interrupted by the COVID-19 outbreak. He was unable to participate in his junior season in the spring of 2021 due to a torn ACL. Pickens completed just five passes, but finished with a 52-yard touchdown catch that gave Georgia a win in the College Football Playoff. He later stated that he would enter the 2022 NFL Draft.
