Nitin, who has won over 20 international awards, a CBE and an Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement Award, said he passed out and woke up in a “pool of blood” after hitting his face on a glass table.

On Wednesday, he took to his X platform and wrote: “After much thought, I’ve decided to explain myself regarding the post below… A few days ago, out of nowhere, I had a heart attack.

“Guys… I was rushed to hospital and the NHS put a stent in one of the arteries leading to my heart, after which I was kept to await a similar operation (which I referred to in my quoted post) on the other artery.”

The producer and composer said he underwent two emergency surgeries and will need a third in the coming weeks.

“Both operations went well and the NHS was fantastic,” he continued.

“Next month I’ll need a third, major operation, but I’m taking it one day at a time… I train with weights 3-4 times a week, I box regularly, I eat healthy and I’ve had no history of heart disease.

“When I talked to the doctor, he said it was probably a genetic predisposition.

“Basically, as a British Asian I am significantly more likely to have cardiovascular disease or a heart attack.

“My dad had a triple heart bypass, my mom had two heart attacks, and three of my uncles had heart attacks, one of whom died on the spot.”

Nitin then went on to describe in detail the terrifying incident that forced him to seek treatment from a plastic surgeon after sustaining facial injuries.

He said: “It’s a terrifying feeling. Your chest feels like someone is sitting on your chest holding a 200kg weight and your head feels like it’s spinning out of control as you struggle to stay conscious.

“In my case, I passed out completely, fell onto a glass ornament from a standing position, smashed a coffee table on my face as I collapsed in a pool of blood and broken debris, penetrating both cheeks, my nose and the area just below my eyes.

“Later, a plastic surgeon had to carefully remove pieces of glass from my face with tweezers after four injections into my face.”

Nitin said he will cancel his performance on WOMADelaide’s Australian tour this month and reschedule it for next year.

But the star said she will be back on her UK Identity Tour in April, when she will visit Glasgow, Birmingham, Brighton and London.

He added: “I’m fine… and (quick plug) we’ll still be touring the UK in April (Glasgow, Birmingham, Brighton and London between the 7th and 11th. Obviously we’ve had to postpone playing WOMADelaide until next year.

“We also have to postpone my show at The Hallé on May 4th to later in the year as it will be shortly after my third heart operation.

“On a positive note, I’m also proud to say that I (plug 2) produced three tracks on Rod Stewart and Jools Holland’s current UK number one album. Ok. Self-promotion over.”

On a serious note, Nitin urged people to seek medical advice if they are concerned about their heart.

He continued: “The bottom line is that there has recently been an alarming rise in deaths from heart disease.. particularly among British Asians. So… if you’re Asian or, to be honest, in any vulnerable group… get your heart checked. Could would save your life. You might not see anything like this… I didn’t.”

The musician has recorded several albums, film soundtracks and compilations that include more than 70 film and TV songs.

He is also “established as a worldwide producer, songwriter, touring artist, BBC Radio and club DJ, multi-instrumentalist, theater composer, dance, video game and orchestral composer and cultural/political commentator”.

Nitin has collaborated and written for Paul McCartney, Sting, Ellie Goulding, Shakira, Joss Stone and Pink Floyd among many others.

He has won over 20 major national and international awards and is a member of the Oscars, BAFTAs and Grammys.

His score for Channel 4’s Second Generation was nominated for an Ivor Novello Award for Film and TV Composition.

He also composed a new symphony to accompany Franz Osten’s 1929 silent film, Throwing the Dice.

Some of his other works include music for Jhumpa Lahiri’s adaptation of Oscar-nominated director Mira Nair’s The Namesake and Human Planet for the BBC.
