Nitin Menon represents Madhya Pradesh in Class A cricket. He played two matches in the Ranji One-Day Trophy; Madhya Pradesh against Vidarbha on January 8, 2004, and Madhya Pradesh against Uttar Pradesh on January 9, 2004. He has also competed in the under-16, under-19 and under-23 categories.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Nitin became a state umpire in Madhya Pradesh in 2005. He passed the BCCI All India Umpires Examination in 2006 and started supervising domestic matches in the 2007-08 season. He made his international debut on 26 January 2017 in a Twenty20 match between England and India at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. This was part of England’s tour of India, which India won 2-1 in the three games. Nitin served as the TV (third) umpire on the second day of the series.

Nitin made his ODI (One-Day International) debut against Afghanistan on March 15, 2017, at the Greater Noida Stadium. On day two of a three-game series, he oversaw as a television referee. Nitin made his Test match debut against the West Indies at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on 27 November 2019, and became the 62nd Test match umpire from India.

In October 2018, Nitin was selected as one of the 12 on-field referees for the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 2018. He also served as an on-field referee during the 2019 Indian Premier League. However, during the 2021 season, he had to leave midway because his mother and wife tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. In February 2020, the ICC (International Cricket Council) appointed him to oversee the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

In June 2020, 36-year-old Nitin was promoted to a member of the International Criminal Court’s elite referee panel. He replaces England umpire Nigel Llong and becomes the third Indian umpire to join the group. After being selected, he said in an interview,

Menon was praised by the cricketing fraternity for his role as umpiring during England’s tour of India in March 2021.

His dream was to umpire in the Ashes and it came true in June 2023; he started officiating the series from the third day. Talking about this issue in an interview, he said,

I’m also really excited about it because it’s my dream. I couldn’t finish the previous Ashes because it took place during COVID. So I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully I can do my best there. “
