Noah Kahan Says He’s Working on Feeling ‘Deserving’ After Joking He Was ‘Least Cool Guy’ at Grammys

Noah Kahan opens up about feeling a little impostor syndrome at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

The “Stick Season” singer, 27, was nominated for best new artist at this year’s Feb. 4 show, going up against stars like Ice Spice, Jelly Roll and Victoria Monét, who eventually took home the award.

Although Kahan wrote on Instagram that he considers it the “privilege of a lifetime” to be a part of the Grammys, he opened up about his worries about the day in a new interview with Guard.

“I was sitting by myself, like, ‘Wow, I’m the least cool guy at the party right now.’ My mom is killing it, everyone around me is killing it,” said Kahan, who brought his mom, Laura, as a chaperone. “It played into this idea that I have of myself — which is not healthy — that I don’t belong. ”

The musician has long been open about his struggles with anxiety and mental health, and last year launched The Busyhead Project, which supports organizations that raise awareness of mental health.

Still, his anxieties weighed on him, and Kahan told the paper that embracing his recent success is something he’s still learning how to do.

“I could stand up and say hi to somebody — I did it myself,” he said. “It’s one of those things I have to work on, finding out how to feel worthy and valuable.”

Kahan released Stick season, his third album, in October 2022 following the viral success of the title track on TikTok. He has since released two iterations of the album, the most recent Wand Season (Forever)featuring duets of fan favorites with stars like Kacey Musgraves and Sam Fender.

He is currently on his We’ll All Be Here Forever tour, which is scheduled to run until September, and has achieved a number of achievements in recent months, such as performing at Saturday night live.

In another new interview with The New YorkerKahan explained the duality of his sudden rise to fame and how it weighed on him.

“It’s hard to describe how lonely it is when everyone thinks you’re succeeding and you feel like you’re barely getting by,” he said. “I’m so fucking lucky and privileged to be in this position. But I still feel like any other human being: stress, anxiety. I’ve been feeling it more than I wanted to lately.”

Kahan told PEOPLE in October that he felt “a lot of pressure” to follow through Stick season with his next album, but he’ll definitely take time to find his focus before releasing anything new.
