Noah Lyles Done with Olympics After Positive COVID Diagnosis, 200 Meter Bronze: ‘This Will Be the End'

Noah Lyles’ 2024 Olympic journey has come to an end for now.

The Team USA sprinter, 27, made the announcement on his Instagram account on Thursday, August 8 after winning the bronze medal in the men’s 200m final. Lyles had tested positive for COVID two days before, but still competed after resting and quarantined.

“First, I want to thank God for getting me through the entire Olympics! Second, I want to congratulate @tebogo_letsile_ , @kenny_bednarek and everyone else for an amazing Olympic 200m final,” Lyles wrote, tagging the gold and silver medalists in the race.

“Finally, I want to thank everyone for their messages of support. I believe this will be the end of my 2024 Olympics. It’s not the Olympics I dreamed of, but it left me with so much joy in my heart. I hope everyone enjoyed the show. Whether cheered for me or against me, you have to admit you watched, right? 😉 See you next time,” he added.

Lyles told NBC that he woke up feeling nauseous on Tuesday, August 6.

“I woke up early, around 5am on Tuesday morning, and I felt really awful and I knew it was more than just pain from 100[-meter race]you know,” the sprinter told NBC’s Lewis Johnson. “He woke up the doctors and we got tested. Unfortunately, it turned out that I was positive for COVID.”

When Johnson was asked if he would participate in the men’s 4×100-meter relay final on Friday, Aug. 9, Lyles, who did not run in the qualifiers, said it was fine for him to withdraw.

“They proved with great confidence that they can handle it without me,” he said of his Team USA teammates. “If that’s the case, when I go out today, I’m fine with saying, “Hey guys, whatever you’re doing, you’ve got more than enough speed to win a gold medal.”

The team of Christian Coleman, Fred Kerley, Kyree King and Courtney Lindsey easily won Thursday’s race to advance to the finals.

Lyles has had mixed results at the Olympics, narrowly winning the 100m final in a photo finish against Jamaica’s Kishana Thompson on Sunday 4 August.

The win marked Lyles’ first Olympic gold medal and the first time Team USA won gold in the event since the 2004 Athens Games. Lyles previously won bronze in the 200m final at Tokyo 2021.
