On July 31, 2022, a guy in Indiana reportedly got out of his car during a traffic stop and started a fire. As a result, Noah Shahnavaz, a young police officer from Indiana, was killed. Noah Shahnavaz, 24, was an 11-month veteran of the Elwood Police Department and a five-year Army veteran. Carl Roy Webb Boards II, 42, of Anderson, was arrested and booked in connection with the incident. Boards was taken to the Hamilton County Jail and will be charged with habitual homicide with a firearm accessory, according to Andrew Hanna, Madison County Senior Deputy Prosecutor.
Noah Shahnavaz allegedly pulled over a 2012 Buick LaCrosse at the intersection of State Route 37 and County Road 1100 North around 2 a.m. Police did not reveal the cause of the traffic stop. Boards then got out of the Buick and fired six rounds, hitting Shahnavaz at least once before fleeing the area.

According to Elwood and Madison County authorities, Shahnavaz was injured during the incident and attempts were made to save him until medical help arrived. Soon after, Shahnavaz was taken to Ascension St. Hospital. Vincent Mercy in Elwood before being airlifted to an Indianapolis area hospital. Unfortunately, he died as a result of his injuries.
Officers with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office located the Buick driving south on State Board 37 around 2:30 a.m. Officers chased the Buick and used a tire deflator at the same location. The truck was also driven to Interstate 69, where Fisher police used two “precision immobilization measures.” According to reports, the car hit the center wall of the barrier. The plates were later arrested. He was being held without bail in the Hamilton County Jail on Sunday.
Elwood officials and citizens mourn the loss of Noah Shahnavaz.
Elwood Mayor Todd Jones noted that it is very difficult to find the right words to offer comfort to the family and community of Noah Shahnavaz. He explained:
“A senseless act of violence took this young man’s life and career.”
Twelve hours after the horrific incident, several residents of Elwood and surrounding areas gathered outside the Elwood government building shortly before a press conference at 2 p.m. Among them were Lindy Walker and Donna Williams.
According to Williams:
“All these policemen were killed. It’s heartbreaking. I hope this person will be held accountable for what he did to the police. “The officer did not deserve to die in this way.”
Another citizen, Bill Partlow, arrived from Frankton to express his grief. Bill was a former firefighter, while his brother Shane Partlow was a former deputy. Both were taken aback by the meeting and said in a statement:
“We are all brothers in first aid, regardless of whether we are retired or not. It’s really personal for each of us. We didn’t expect this to happen here.”
